The absolute best iron I've used that would be perfect for a hobbyist such as yourself to build an amp kit from is the Weller WLC-54. They sell for around $50-$60 (can probably find a used one on Fleabay for cheaper) and have adjustable heat so you don't melt shit. For solder, I recommend the Kester 44 solder.

Other than that, your basic screwdrivers, diagonal wire cutters, wire strippers and needlenose pliers for bending component leads are the necessity items. Wrenches, a basic socket set and some basic nutdrivers are great for pot and jack nuts.

And most importantly, LOTS of patience. Even though this will be your first amp build, there's no reason why your build can't look professional and this takes lots of patience. I've seen lots of nightmare builds by first timers that were only nightmares because they were in a rush to get it built and hear it...and while that's understandable, it's not a race. Don't try to build it all at once...work on it for an hour or two, then take a break. If you feel that you're starting to rush things, take a break. For the money you'll spend on an amp kit I feel that you owe it to yourself to take your time and get it right the first time. Haste makes waste...and why would you waste that kinda money on a rushed build? If there's plenty of time to re-do things, there's more than enough time to do it right the first time.

Also there are lots of knowledgeable guys on here who are willing to help with any sort of questions you may have.

Oh..and welcome to the forum!

+1 but don't forget the multimeter!

I picked up a set of the craftsman mini pliers (the 3 pliers set with diagonal cutters, fine needle nose, and strong needle nose) and they're all you should ever need, plus they're comfy to use.

flemingmras is right on with taking your time though. I was a definite newbie when I did my build, and the best advice I received from another member (tonepilgrim) was to learn about every connection I was making as I was making it. Learn about preamp section in detail, in case you want to tone-hunt. Learn about the theory as to why things work the way they do. Just learn all that you can. This will provide you not only great appreciation for your own amp, but also enable you to trouble shoot and communicate with all of the uber intelligent folks on this forum.

Oh yeah, and have fun! :D
