50 watt for EJ lead tones?

Post by coolhand78 » Wed Sep 09, 2009 1:42 am

Hey folks,

I'm still on the hunt for a plexi... as i havent yet sold my vibroverb...

but here's the thing... i already have a 2x12 with scumbacks that i'd love to be able
to use... saves having to purchase a whole new cab... ;)

so i'm wondering if any of the brains trust here know of the model and/or mods
that eric johnson used for Alein love child... apparently it was a 67or 68 50 watt...?
and if the metro 50 watter will get me there..?

a 50 watter would probably suit me better as chances of diming a 100watter are pretty low...

any help you kind folks could impart would be greatly appreciated! as i stated in a previous
post i have the following pedals at my disposal...

BK Butler Tube Drive (w/ yugo tube)
D*A*M Red Rooster
Sunface Nkt275
Mjm London fuzz (bc108)
Mjm Blues Devil
Timmy
Echoplex EP3
Diamond Memory Lane
Clinch Fx Ep pre (on the way)

cheers

Luke.

Can't help you much with the EJ question but one thing I can tell you is that your chances of diming a 50 watt are not much better than diming the 100 watt. There's only a few dB difference. The 50 watt shakes the house. It's way loud (sounds awsome though). Good luck.

I think that I read that EJ used a 50 watter for leads on that stuff. It was probably a similar combo of 50 and 100 watt Marshalls with some Fenders thrown in that he uses today. In any case, the 50 watt is loud but depending on which Scumbacks you have, it won't be as loud as you might think. The M75's are rated at 97dB. Compared to my other 212 cab with Celestion V30/G12H, which are about 100 dB sensitivity or more, the volume is tolerable. I have the Metro JMP 50 and crank it through my Scumback loaded 212. It is awesome but probably still too loud for most situations. I have a PPIMV to take the volume down a bit and it sounds better than my Hotplate at comparable levels. With the pedals that you have you probably can run the amp at a lower volume and get great tone. Good luck.

Here is what Eric Johnson's setup looked like in 2001.

Back then he used two Plexi heads one being a 68 tremolo and a 67 Plexi 50 watt.

Not having a good attenuator is like not having a guitar cord. A good attenuator will make it sound loud at comfortable volumes they are indispensable.

I've spent the last few weeks trying to match Eric Johnsons Marshall tones from Ah Via Musicom with my MetroAmp 50 watt plexi. (It's only been one of my favorite albums for about 19 years. Getting a plexi has inspired me to go back and actually learn some of the tunes.) I get real close with my Dunlop hand wired BC108 into the MetroAmp through a 8 ohm hot plate into a Marshall 4x12 loaded with two Celestion G12EVH and two Celestion G12H30's. As Eric suggests, I found I like the sound of the amp best at 8 ohms. It seems to have a smoother and more balanced tone overall. I even tried moving the feedback loop to to the 8 ohm tap when running a 16 ohm load but that did not seem to have quite the same effect on the tone.

Oh yeah, Presence 0 - Bass 5 - Mid -4 Treble 0.

For low volumes I have found that a Fulltone OCD placed after the BC108 gets a good EJ tone. The fulltone OCD does a great job of matching the overall tone of the cranked plexi. In a lot of ways it sounds better than having the Hot Plate turned down real low. For this use I also removed the treble bleed cap from the Volume One pot which yields a more consistent tone as the amp volume is turned down.

Of course the amp sound best turned all the way up, but it is LOUD in just about any room.
