Unfortunately it's not done yet. I just list it in my sig. I'll give a full tone report here and on the LPF when I get it. Jim said it should be done in a few weeks.

All right, the amp was delivered here at the shop today. I got the replacement amp #10018 shipped and now I'll put the original amp #10017 on the bench and get to the bottom of this issue.
I'll let you guys know what it turns out to be.

Well, when I first put it up and installed a new mains fuse, it was indeed drawing lots of current. So we're not all crazy. That's good.

I wiggled a few wires and checked a few places for voltage with the variac set really low. Wouldn't you know it came right up like nothing was wrong.....
Kind of to be expected with this amp by now. So I started torture testing a bit. I powered on and started moving wires, tapping components, wiggling the chassis on the bench and so on. No fuses blew, but something didn't quite seem right.

I pulled the Lar/Mar MV out and wired it stock. Installed and biased the output tubes, then played dimed for about 20 minutes. All good so far. I'm wondering if the Alpha pot was faulty? Possibly, since the short could only have been from the PT heater secondary or bias secondary. The HT was out of the holder when it was drawing high current.
A faulty MV pot could have been dumping bias voltage to ground intermittently.

I'll run it through my usual 24 hour burn in process and report back how it holds up.

SDM pointed out to me that even as a dead short the aloha dual pot wouldn't draw enough current to trip the mains fuse. I think I was grasping for any explanation there.

This was just one of those flukes that happen. First amp to do this to me in about 3-4 years. It's got a few more hours on it here and it's running like a champ.

I bet using those "Aloha" pots gives the amp a killer tone for surf music such as The Beach Boys and the like.

No matter how good a company is or how good the mastermind behind said company is...there's always that one product that has to rear its ugly head to try and raise that string of doubt in the consumers mind. It refuses to work...it defies all laws of electronics and just simply flat out refuses to work...then works fine as soon as it gets sent back...kinda like the school bully who beats you up for your lunch money, then acts like the sweetest little angel when confronted by the teachers about his behavior.

However as always has been the case and I'm sure will be the case for years to come, George came to the rescue and got ya covered. Hands down some of the absolute best customer service anyone will ever find in this industry is found right here at MetroAmp.
