Differences between Metro 69 100 Watter and 68 12xxx series?

I've always been curious. I built a 69 plexi last year, but it seems that most people on this forum seem to prefer the 68. What are the sound differences between these two circuits? Why do most people on this forum seem to prefer the earlier circuit?

It can be a decent amount of things or a few things. The last 12 series amps were exactly the same as a 69. Most of the later ones look to have the same values and be the same amp electronically, it would just mount axial filter caps on a power board inside instead of chassis mounted cans. Then as you go back further you have things like filtering that is lowered, and values throughout the amp that reflect more 'Bass' or 'JTM' values.

I don't know if most people "prefer" it. I think it just garnered a lot of attention because of all the EVH afficianados and their desire to replicate Ed's VH I tone. The specs George offers in his shop caters to this so I suppose folks that want more of metal/balls out rock sound dig it. I'm sure you could mod the '69 to the same territory easily enough. For me, aesthetically, I just think having a separate power board looks cooler on the pre-'69 amps. :D '67/'68 were transitional years so like Dan mentioned, it's a playground for tinkering.
