Cap orientation. 50 watt

Post by dan_tramble » Sun Feb 07, 2016 4:10 pm

Hello all

Ordered a kit from valve storm

Two questions

I am using the Mallory caps, the SoZo are marked for outside foil orientation. The foil I see on the builds usually goes to the tube side. Is there any benefit to checking the Mallory outside foil and marking and installing accordingly to the tube side?

Secondly. Robert specifies a 0.0022 uF V1B plate bypass cap whereas the stock kit states a 0.022 uF. From what I gather the 0.0022 uF is more like a 70 plexi whereas the 0.022 is like a 68

What would I see in tonal differences

I have tried installing the caps with the outer foil trick and I have also used others that were not marked. I could never hear any difference either way but it couldn't hurt to do it if you can identify the outer foil. Using the .0022uf cap will shave off a little of the bass frequencies and help to tighten things up in that stage. I preferred the .022uf in my 50watt build but you could try both and decide on the best one.

The .0022 started in the early JMP 50s. As long as theres the 2 .68uf bypass caps in the first JMPs the .0022s were used and continued throughout all the latter 1987 models to come.
