Not to be a stick in the mud but is there anything that makes Georges head boxes better than the competition? Are they all the same or is George's more like the originals. Anybody know who makes Georges cabinets?
Thanks,
Chris Stokes

Mojo musical supply makes George's cabs and head boxes.

They are the best in the world. Finger-jointed Baltic birch and the tolex job is par excellence.

I built a Metro JTM 45 kit and I was beyond impressed. It can't be done better.

When Marshall went from plexi to metal panel the frontlip below the control panel went from a flat top to round top to match the curve underneath.

I had thought that the change happened when they went to large cabs in 71 but my original metalpanel 69 has a round lip.

Otherwise they are identical.

So Mojo is making small head cabinets for Metal Panel's and not Plexi's?

Why wouldn't they just flatten the wood there on the bottom, and put Tolex on,for the Plexi models?

I am pretty shure the Mojo big box cab, has the flat lip, and they are all most likely cut by a computer program, I as well wish the smallbox had the flap lip on the front, but changing tooling for Mojo might be an expensive venture. otherwise these cabinets are some of the finest quality available.

I still say if you (or I) could get the head cab without the tolex installed, we could use a wood rasp (file) to flatten that lip down.

Then, with included instructions, contact-cement that tolex on.

The best of all possible outcomes, and it wouldn't cost Mojo or George any more $ to do so, in fact, they would save the cost of labor on the covering part.

Covering with tolex is NOT for the inexperienced. You'd likely not get near as good a job if you didn't do it for a living like the guys at Mojo or even at Marshall.

...flat lip or no the box is killer.

I have one large box for my metro JTM45/100 (flat lip) and a smallbox for my Metro 50watter (round lip).

Both are well made and well finished, unless you are into making fakes I am not sure what difference a round lip vs a flat lip makes? (IMO of course!!)

George's big box 100-watt case has a flat lip because he has them made that way (the vent size is also different I believe.) The standard Mojo head cabs that you order off their web site have a rounded lip and bigger top vent.

You are better off buying the cabinet from George, or someone else.

I know for a fact that even if George's cabinet is more expensive, there is no substitute for quality...and George is all about quality, bar none.

There's the issue of getting the correct dimensions, the right wood (Pine?),the Tolex, the piping, nameplate, feet, handle, and the correct hardware to mount the chassis, feet, and handle; and the correct positioning of all those components.

To do it right, you'll need an accurate Radial Arm and/or Table Saw,a Router, router bits,etc...

If you are just building a "Workhorse" head, just make the cabinet the size to fit the chassis, and don't worry about the correct dimensions.

I'm not into making fakes, and I know of nobody that is.

However, if someone had a vintage Marshall 50 watt or other small head cabinet that was damaged, they might like to buy a cabinet for it...and if so, the exact duplicate of the Marshall small head cabinet (I assume) would be the logical choice.

My old trusty 50 watt small cabinet head is in George's Lab right now getting a "Period Correct" restoration....and even though I bought it back in the day for it's sound,I think it would be cool to have it look as good as a brand - new amp head,as well as sounding like one.

I asked George about certain things that could be done to it to restore it to "Pristine" condition, and he's so far talked me out of some things, because the value of it will go down.

Now that I think of it, I didn't buy it as a "financial Investment"....so I'm gonna have to give him the go - ahead to replace some things.

To H*ll with the collectors....I'm a player!
