The 50 watt kit speaker test thread...

Post by Scumback Speakers » Mon Dec 03, 2007 1:59 pm

OK, the gear used is the 50 watt kit with the Mullard in V1, Bugle Boys in V2 & V3, matched Telefunken EL 34's, biased to 34 ma. Mercury RS PT and OT (050 PLM model), with 465 plate volts. I removed the 250 pf bright cap from the EQ for these tests.

Guitar used: 63 Fool SG, WCR Crossroads neck (7.8k), Godwood bridge (9.8k), 50's style wiring, .015 Black Beauty neck cap, .033 Black Beauty Bridge cap, plugged straight in.

Channel I used, Volume 8.5, Presence 8, Bass 8, Mids 8, Treble 6
The test results on the two speaker mixes...

1) 68 Slant, basketweave cloth, plywood back panel, casters on, with four M75 16 ohm 25 watt speakers, already had 30 hours on them so they should be well broken in.

Ridiculously good overall tone, more midrange push, with a sweet top end that didn't rip your head off, but had great clarity. Bass response was much better than I figured it would be, which surprised me, cuz I'm not an M type guy. So maybe I'll have to rethink my thoughts on my M's after 3 years, LOL.
Treble was very articulate, as were the mids, and you got that "thunk" from the cab on the bass notes, which were well defined.

2) Mojotone straight cab, basketweave cloth, plywood back panel, casters on, two G12M 102 003 cones, two G12M 444 (55hz) bass cones, loaded in an X pattern.

This cab was bigger and fatter sounding than the slant, and had a good deal more bass, that was tighter and had a real defined chunk to it. High end was still clear, but it took a notch off of the treble so that you could turn up the treble more, or have a brighter bridge pickup/settings.

Mids were pretty much the same, although I noticed more lower mids to go along with the standard mids, most likely due to the 55hz G12M 444 cone adding that in.

Overall thoughts...if you're going to be a lead guitar player and doing chords, and you're the only guy in the band, I'd probably lean towards the 55/75 mix, since it's warmer and fatter sounding.

If you were going to be in a two guitar player band, then I'd lean towards the four 75 hz M's. Keep in mind that the four 75 hz M's will feed back quicker than the 55/75 mix, and sound just a notch more lively. However, if you're going to hit the amp with an OD, pedals, and use both single and hum loaded guitars, I think the 55/75 mix would be a better choice.

I'm basing this on putting myself in a cover band situation (since I just joined one again after a 24 year layoff) with multiple fx on pedal board, 3 OD's among them, and the usual wah, volume, flanger/chorus and delay pedals.

Oh...and thanks for the 1 meg pot for the bass, I swapped that out before I started the tests.

Now I have this Komet clone here that I have to move to next....then I go to storage and get MORE cabs to try. It's a tough day for me...no...REALLY! I'll report back when I get back with the H magnets and put them through the paces.

No clips, or link to them, sorry. I am just giving you guys my impression of how the amp sounds with various speakers. I'm going out of town tomorrow for a couple of days, but I'll report back on the Scumnicos and the H's tomorrow after my wife leaves for work.

I'm always happy to do a phone demo, though. A couple of folks have asked me for that already, and I obliged them with some mid 60's "Live at Leeds" and clumsy pentatonic blues wanking.

They didn't barf while they were on the phone with me...one guy, a member here, didn't even hang up the phone on me, which I fully expected. I went off on a tangent for a second... Thanks for being so kind, thousandtshirts! :D

Oh yeah!

I got my clips on the phone (the amp and the playing were great, Jim, that's good music) and my order for four Scumbacks goes in tomorrow. I'm just going to sleep on the H75/H55 mix decision, and that's it. That 50w sounded damn fine.

Hard to hear what you can't have, though. I'm still stuck waiting until the 25th to "unwrap" my 50w and get started building. Blast you, confounded woman! Triple damn! But yes, I know it will be a happy holiday!
