I'm getting a 1987X next week

Post by Radialaced » Tue Mar 27, 2007 10:41 pm

I'm getting a 1987X next week, what can George do for me to improve this head?

How should I expect this head to sound? Any simple mods that will get "the golden tone" out of this head?

Does George have a board that drops in this head?

I put my 1974X up for consignment, I already regret it :-(

Thanks

Give the amp a fair chance on its own merits. A guy I know brought one over a couple of years ago that he picked up, and it stomped all over my mid-70's Marshalls with fat clean tones I couldn't touch, and nice singing overdrive. I was stunned to say the least.

I just sold a 1987x that I put one of Georges boards in with mustard caps and upgraded output transf, I regret selling it ,that amp had a big bunch of tone with much power very warm cleans and singing lead overdrive with just the guitar volume, give that 50 watt a chance!

I agree.

Things I would tweak might be change the bright cap on Vol 1 (500-1000pF ceramic disc) suits me best.

Change NFB resistor from 100k on 4ohm tap to 47k on 8ohm tap.

That gives you late plexi spec with maybe $1 outlay and 30mins with a soldering iron.

If you really want to spend money get x3 NOS tested ande burned in Mullard preamp valves and a pair of tested and burned Mullard EL34s.

Hi guys, I'm so encouraged by your responses.

I'm really missing my 1974x and I hope I can get the tones I want with the 1987x.

I need a cab too. any suggestions on a cab and speakers?

Thanks

My preference is G12H30s x2 75Hz and x2 554Hz in a straight Marshall or Orange 4x12. Older the speakers the better or you might find it a bit harsh.

Hi I have a 1987x with a metroamp board heyboer OT and MM choke...sozo caps and a PPIV master volume with the presence control moved to the back. It's a really good sounding head and you can get great tones at any level. I love it. The PTP mods and the OT improved the stock tone, but it wasn't too bad stock either...try it and see what you want to change about it. For some the 50 watters can get farty on the low end,but I don't have that problem. Also I have several cabs, but a 4x12 with Legend GB-12's is my favorite. :D
