Need some wisdom with an old plexi Power transformer

Post by ampSnob » Thu Feb 21, 2013 10:06 pm

This was pulled from a 67 super PA. It actually works and I originally thought it was a replacement because it only has 220v and 240v taps and the wires were all the wrong colors. Upon closer inspection, it looks like it was repaired at some point meaning that it might actually be the original and someone rewound a portion of it or something. I started to pull laminations off just because I was curious and they are not stuck together or anything so I'm almost certain this has been taken apart before a very long long time ago as the replacement wire shields are extremely brittle. If you look at the pictures you can see possible burn marks on the paper and where the missing taps might have come out of the windings.

My questions are, could it possibly be the original T2562? If so, is this salvageable at all? Can the core be fixed like it might have been before and a 120v tap added? If that's too iffy, impossible or dangerous, can the laminates be reused somehow? Would the amp be worth more with the original laminates reused, or is it about a wash just to replace it with a good replacement? I have a Marstran ready to go if this is a gonner.

Thanks in advance. At the very least, you get to see some old iron pics.

Edit: better res pics

Well that looks toasty.

Not sure about originality (you might want to consider taking some better pics). I'd send Brian at Marstran a message and see what he says.

Rewinds can be done using the original laminates, but it is a lengthy procedure and understandably costs more than a replacement transformer.

Again, speak to Brian about this too, if he can confirm originality and you don't mind spending out.
So I like purple, okay!!!!!!
