Primary impedance 1.75k vs 2.2k

Post by Ralle » Fri Aug 12, 2011 10:21 am

Hi. A question about the 2" Drake output trannny... or any output tranny actually...
I wonder about the effect on the SOUND ( allready understand about the volume ) a rais from 1.75k to 2.2k will have...
Will it become cleaner, or will it be gainier... more distortion... what about; will it be more edge to it, or softer...
Thanx in advance

I wouldn't expect there would be much difference. Insert a set of EL34s into an amp intended for 6L6s, and the higher OT primary impedance does alter the sound a bit, but not in a way that I find especially complimentary (not where this context is concerned anyway). The difference between 1.7k and 2.2k is much smaller than that.

Thanx Ted... But I'm interested in what way the sound is altered, no matter how small the change may be... theorticly, that is... What would be expected to happen to the sound...

" and the higher OT primary impedance does alter the sound a bit "

In what way?

Altering the primary Z changes the primary inductance, which affects harmonics, output, etc. It's been a looong time since I played around with this, but increasing the primary impedance with a JTM45 RS OT from 6.6k->8k->9k changed the feel of the amp to something that sounded a little more 'Hi-Fi' and less aggressive, IIRC. I didn't care much for that. Ditto that observation for a Marshall 18w.

I doubt you'd notice much difference at all between 1.7k and 2.2k. Perhaps someone with more hands-on tranny development and testing could chime in.

When you said " less agressive "... that's one very important keyword for me... That leads me more towoards what I think will happen...
I probably won't hear any difference between 1.75 and 2.2k, but it's more the notion that erges me...
Thanx alot Ted

The 2K2 sounds a bit less "harsh" than the 1K75, IMHO.
