Late 70's 50 watters

Post by jerrydyer » Tue Mar 02, 2010 2:11 pm

they ran at a lower voltage. I want to incorporate that into my line. Im trying to read up but some of the stuff is just over my head. I want to run just under 400 on my 50 watters.

A 300-0-300VAC power tranny should get you about a 400V plate voltage with the valves installed and running (about 424V w/o valves installed). The Hammond 272HX (200mA model) or 272JX (250mA model) would be the best bets for this if you were to go with Hammond.

The 270HX (275-0-275VAC @ 200mA) would get you into the 360-380VDC neighborhood.

I just got done using this one here and I'm getting right at 400 with a gz34 . It also has secondary taps for 370 VDC . I'll try to get some pics up but it's pretty much a tube rectified JPM 50 lead.

I saw those ones and I used one in a rocket clone it sounded great but it was cathode biased el84. There still some things I need to learn. Am I goint to need to make any major changes if Im using one in a 2204 type setup or is it pretty much plug and play. My 79 2204 had a 6550 bias circuit so Ive been using that set up in all my builds.

I'd say ask Brian but if you don't want to use the tube rectifier , I don't see where it would hurt anything. I've got some Tesla EL34s I got from tubetramp and a NOS GE 5AR4 that and some old pres I got from him as well and I think it sounds great.

I have the mains filtering at 50 instead of 100 but everything else is like a regular 50. When my son comes home on break ,I'll have him record a few samples.
