I just found a 1959 amp from 1972. Does anybody know what OT it has in it? Is it worth trying?

Usual OT is Dagnall, still using the C1998 (not usually a number on these). A small number were released with Dagnall 1201-99 OTs as well.

I would have thought it is worth a go

Thanx!
So does it have nylon or paper bobbin? I have been trying doing alot of reasearch. And I can't seem to figure out with transformers are good and not. I know that the 68/69 C1998 is supposeds to be great, and that the OT:s got worse over time. 72 is not the same transformer as the 68/69 C1998 is it? What is a good kondition 72 100w OT worth?

Ok then,

How do I tell the difference between a Dagnall #2668 and a #1998 without hooking it up to my amp to try to hear the difference? Please somebody?

The 1998 does have the stiff secondary wires - the 2668 does have stranded wires as for the secondaries. AFAIK Marshall already in late 1969 or early 1970 switched from the 1998 to the 2668

Thanx Larry
aha... I got a couple of very old trannies.. so I better start looking for some solid core secondary wires  Some people on this forum claims that they all sound the same from 68 up to 72.. How can that be?

you should hear me cranking my latest build now! only 50km away from Nuernberg..

And I claim, that when you take 5 OT's, all from '69 - you may be lucky, when you find two out of these 5, who are sounding the same.

My experience is, that even OT's from the same batch, wound with copper from the same rolls and attached with sheet metal from the same run are sounding different.

Thanks for coming in with more reliable info. Larry.

I was on shaky ground about exactly when change over happened. I am sure I saw a 71 with self leads - obviously mistaken. Afraid my 71 has Drakes which sound ok but no use to you in your Dagnall search :(

Sorry to dig up this thread from the past with this completely random question. Just curious and have to know - Is the iron (makeup, arrangement, size) from a 2668 the same as a 1998? Since there are from the same era I was wondering if the actual iron part is identical.

I guess the real question is could a 2668 could be rewired to a 1998? Is this feasible or is it blasphemy to consider doing this to a vintage transformer?

If this rewind is possible, would the sonic improvement be worth it? Or would there be some other factors that would make it not quite vintage c1998 sounding?
