Strange Drakes in early 70s 100 watter

Post by neikeel » Sat May 12, 2007 11:22 am

Just picked up 71 ('c') suffix 100 watter.

OT is 1201-99

PT is 1209-3

They both look original and both have heavy duty clamps.

I thought Marshall used Dagnalls post '67??

No idea if they are any good yet as all the Daly caps are suspect and will need replacing. Ratty on the outside unmolested inside (dye on joints and tranny bolts).

Any ideas?

I know that you have all been worried sick about my question, looking here there and every where for an answer, but I found it here 8)

http://vintageamps.com/plexiboard/viewt ... ght=120199

so Brian seems to think these are original. I have to give the whole plot a clean, repalce the bulging/leaking filter caps and the output tubes before I try to fire her up and see what it sounds like :)

Yes, those transformers were used in 100W's but they are rare.

Please post or send me pictures of this amp. :D

Here are the pics of these unusual trannies in my 71 (C suffix) 100 watter.

They appear original to the amp. which is pretty stock save for a balanced line out for recording. TT came up with the goods for a matched set of EL34s and I already had a 161, 163 and CV4004 Mullard preamp tubes.

PT primaries: Brown 110/Red 120/Yellow 220/230 and Green 240/250
PT secondaries: Blue/blue HT, Purple HT centre tap, Green/green heaters, Pink/Grey earth, Pink bias feed.

OT primaries: Red V4 & 5, Brown V6 & V7
OT secondaries: Brown common, Black 4ohm, Yellow 8ohm, Green 16ohm.

Anyone else seen these instead of Dagnalls in a '71?

I have not tried amp yet as I have to finish tidying up (indicator light, bias resistors and new V1 cathode cap). Not sure about pulling the line out as I usually take the line out from my Hotplate even if I'm not using it as an attenuator.

I know that I shall form my own opinions about how they sound in isolation but will not be able to compare them with the Dagnall equivalents as my other 100watter is the metro 45/100.

Is there any received wisdom about these transformers compared with Dagnalls?

They are wound to the same specs as their Dagnall counterparts but that does not mean that they have the same lams or sound the same at all. Maybe some comparison clips can be made by a few people?

Hmm... that's a 2" Ot, right? A difference right there, allready... eaven if it's wound the same, the core is bigger... Am I correct?

I think it's less than 2 inch but someone needs to measure it to be 100%.

Drake I pulled from '70 Superlead 100 watter.
The poor camera angle makes it look 3/16" under..but it does measure exactly 2".

Are you just measuring the stack? The bell covers should not be included in the overall measurement.

So do you guys think this could possibly be the infamous 2" OT replaced in EVH plexi amp???
I have one in a '71 100watter (also the PT is drake), but I don't find many informations around..

IMO they just sound sooo better than the typical C2668 of the era (though not as good as C1998).
This amp seems more in tone like a "enlarged 50 watter" with sweet mids though plenty of headroom, than the typical 100W with gnarly low-mids, oomph, and bright presence on top. There is also much more clarity on single strings.
Proud to be loud!
