So, do you recommend it? Obviously you like how it handles high end, because you're thinking about using on OH's. Would you track a whole kit through it if you had a full chassis?

I don't know how I missed this post. George you have any before clips on these tracks? They sound real punchy to me as they are.

I might have to build one of those myself. Doesn't look too bad. How do you power it up?

Sure, here's a clip of the version that was "mastered" and released. With a little back story.

I wrote this years ago as a guitar part that reminded me of an organ groove. Later, it was adapted for the band you hear in this clip. Then, with some power struggles happening in the studio, it was mixed, sped up and supposedly "mastered". Without my involvement.

What you hear in this clip is what came back.

I'll let you listen first, then we can talk about any one of the myriad of things that are wrong and why the so called mastering engineer needs to be socked in the jaw....

George, I'm done spackling and sanding. The end is in sight!!!

I'm still going back and forth between a dedicated DAW or a 'puter set up. Doing all the research I can. The last gear I recorded on was that, ah, tape stuff. Yeah, that's what it was called!

This is a valuable thread for me. PLease keep then inof flowing guys.

Yeah, it's mostly the mud in the low-mids that's the problem. Like they boosted 250 Hz from-here-to-breakfast. That's accentuating the verb on the kick too, which adds to the mud. It kinda sounds like the mastering engineer thought that the mix was too thin and was trying to fatten it up to compensate. But with the verb on the kick and that bass which already has enough low mids in it, it just created a puddle.

I hate it when bad things happen to good riffs!

The direct affect of WAY over compressing a mix. Period.

There are no dynamics left, whatsoever. Your ears are tired by the first chorus.

The limiting has brought the reverb up and it sounds rediculous.

How about that nasty "shh" sound on every vocal phrase? Nice huh?

No depth or sense of dimension what so ever. All too common these day. Any jerkoff with a maximizer can pumel a mix into a square wave.

Compare this waveform to any great recording and you'll see it plain as day.

Most of the music out today is way overcompressed.
Then the music, goes to a radio station, and they compress the hell out of it again. Building my own amps really has opened my ears to this, as far as guitar goes. It's exilerating when you play along with your favorite song, and your gear sounds more dynamic, but still has that same recognizeble signature sound to nail the song your playing. Thanks George.

Everyone talks about how great the grind is with these plexi,but many don't realize how pretty the clean is, especialy with a strat. (maybe it's partly my guitar - A Swamp Ash Fat Strat Brian Moore with a 5A Koa Top, Duncan Aps2 single coils, and a JB in the Bridge with the Wilkenson Trem, it is sweet, better than all the Les Pauls Standards and CS Strats I tried, and able to get the tones of both, but better) I really hope when I get this recording gear, that I can capture this.
After I get the Multiface and Monitor Speakers.
Im gonna rent a bunch of preamps and mics to find my perfect recipe
for recording a Marshall.

Here's a few pics of the N72's in the rack offered by seventh circle audio. Great pres and very cool project. I look forward to building other varieties of preamps he offers. And I highly recommend them.

The modules below the rack are my Telefunkens. I've learned that these are actually just line amps. But (4) of them do have input transformers.
And they sound nice. Much better than the Mackie pres.

I'll try to get some clips made this week. I want to compare the Tele's to the N72's. They are both class A all discreet. Basically line amps with input trannys.
