Because anyone who can afford some PA gear feels like they are qualified to run it.

NOT!

So put guitarists back in control with an 8-input JTM100 PA head and clone vertical 4x12 PA cabs, George.........or better yet, an 8-input Major PA clone.....

Frankly the learning curve on fresh PA owners is a bitch. I remember spending hours of time (that I was supposed to be working) reading up on how to run a damn PA.
Fortunately our crowd was a big part repressed medical students who drank like fish, they were very forgiving listeners while we learned.

The good ones are sound engineers and have an engineering background, but I think alot of Sound Guys are just guys who couldn't be in the band.

Around here sound guys or engineers don't get paid sh!+, a PA once was the cost of a serious musicians rig and the sound guy got a share of the night for a club gig. Now the sound rig costs $15k and up and the sound guy clears $50 after expenses.

I don't know about the US, but in Ireland I think it's because there's no regulatory body, no standardised qualifications or training, no union representation, and no interest on the part of venue owners in anything but selling booze and saving money.

Yep, he who has the biggest PA wins. At least until I run it and show them what it can do.

The bar owners don't care. As long as it doesn't cost them anything, you can bring in as little or as much as you want. Unless you take up too much room on the dance floor. How are they going to line dance on the set break?

Or unless it's so loud no one stays to buy their beer. The bottom line....you're a beer salesman onstage.

SEs that drink or smoke jays really piss me off tbh. It's a job - be a fecking professional. What's truly drives the point home is that people offering to buy you a beer are surprised if you tell them you don't drink when you're working.

And don't get me started on DJs...
