overhead drum mics

I'm looking for a pair of overhead mics. Not ready for the $1,000.00 ones.
What's a good quality model? I'm not sure if I want a real "crisp" "bright" pair
or a "warmer" type????
It will be more for live reinforcement rather than recording, but dual purpose
might be a consideration.
See, I don't know what the heck I'm doing!
Help please!!

I have always had luck with the matched pair of Rode NT5's. I have used them in a studio situation and live.

The mic is fairly versatile, too. If you're recording acoustic guitar or upright bass, throw one of the mics as a secondard mic positioned at the neck, facing toward the sound hole at a decent angle (not directly at the sound hole, though...).

I think brand new, the matched pair is about $400-450. You can probably find them a little cheaper around the net. For a matched pair of microphones that is usable in the studio as well as live, $400 is a bargain (in my opinion).

I believe the capsule is replaceable, too...

Hope this helps!

Groove Tube GT55s are great mics that I used for overheads, vocals, acoustic - anything except guitar cabs as I don't like condensers on guitar cabs.

You can pick these up on ebay now for under US$200 each - new they were around three times this I recall (£350GBP/US$568 each a google search reveals).

Thanks!! I will check these out. Got some cash and need to move before I buy another guitar! HA!
I guess I'll check Ebay to save a little if I can.

Not sure about live work but Oktava mk-012 is a good choice, Joly modded even better.

NT5's are good. I like CAD M179's as well

I love my Oktava MC-012-01, (have Omni, Cardioid and Hypercardioid capsules). I would also suggest the Shure SM-81 if your budget allows $700ish.
