Palmer PGA-04 and PDI-03

Post by Skoora » Mon Aug 06, 2007 9:40 pm

I've searched and not found any useful comparisons/field reports on these guys other than "it sucks" "it rules" and wanted to hear from folks who have used them for direct recording in particular.
I want to avoid a iso cab but need to be very quiet. Are these units truly the same as each other with the 04 having variable control over what's set by switches on the 03? ...Or are they night and day in reality. thanks for any info.

It can't do what a old cab full of greenbacks, nice mic, and pre can do.

That being said, it is a very handy box that is worth the money. You may be able to make the DI tone work for you depending on your style and songs. You can also use it for slaved amp setups or a workbench dummy load.

Another option would be to use a Palmer for input monitoring and record a straight clean DI track at the same time. (muted). Then later you can send it from your recorder outputs, through a reamp box, then through a cranked amp that is mic'd up. The takes are already perfect, so loud tracking time is at the minimum.

Companies that make reamps are Dan Alexander, Radial, and Little Labs.

The PDI03 is the original design. The PGA04 is the second design. I think that he has reissued the original.

I just posted these in the VH forum, so I though I'd give them to you as well.
