Ribbon Microphones

Post by tonejones » Wed Jul 11, 2007 1:53 am

Hello all,

The more I read about ribbon mics, the more I wonder how good they would make a guitar sound......

What would be a good starting point for a ribbon mic????
Let's get going, 'cause there's too much music, too little time!!!!

Ribbon mics are great for getting a big guitar sound quick and easy. They don't have the sizzle of a 57 tho (at least my cheap one doesn't) which is probably why I've read a lot of the time they are used along with a 57 or another mic. Mine, the Apex 210, has a pronounced proximity effect, and my room isnt' great, so it's a trade off getting it close enough for a clean signal, and far enough so it doesn't accumilate bass.

Ribbons are great for guitar. Different than dynamics, but you can cram them right up against the speaker like a 57. Many ribbons are figure 8 pattern, so they pick up more room sound.

The Cascade mics are nice, check out the Fathead and Fathead II. Gutpile should have a review of these very soon.

Check out Plexi Replicas for my personal amp builds...

They just arrived yesterday! I'll make some recordings this weekend using my SM57 and then w/ the Fathead and post the side by side comparison... all variables equal except the mic...

WOW!! These things are amazing!! I'll post clips soon... George had a good idea of micing my cab with an SM57 and a Fathead simultaneously and pan them right and left... that will be the true tale of the tape... Here are some pics...

hey 45auto.... you will not be disappointed 8) ... I am REALLY enjoying these mics  ... I'll get some clips posted soon comparing the SM57 to these... These are definitely a step up from the SM57 (although I don't mind the SM57 at all...) I'll look forward to your review 8) ....

cool! i should have mine monday. i like the idea of the 57 & the fathead together. one thing that has kept me from doing more clips is the fact that i havn't liked the sounds i have gotten with just the 57. rock on guys!

i got my fathead last night. i am very impressed with the package initially. cool travel case, surrounding the included shock mount & oak case for the mic itself. (no crappy cardboard box)mic is very heavy & looks well made. i want to make samples tomorrow night of it vs the 57 & perhaps both combined. thanks for the lead guys.

Mine arrived last week but I haven't had a chance to record a clip. They're so pretty I could just stare at it though.
