i tried it - i thought it had a synthetic sounding top end - i used it for a week and took it out.
having said that... i believe that all the components of a setup need to work together and if yer amp yings and yer pickup yangs and you like the way they work together, then cool. if you try a pickup that yings and yer amp is already yinging it's heart away, you may have more ying than you signed up for.
the components all need to add up to a BALANCE that you like. that's why i'm keeping the pickup for a day when my setup might call for a top end like the dimarzio PAF has - and then i'll like it.
to pontificate further... you ever hear how Ed's guitar sounds on the Brian May Starfleet album? IMO, shrill, thin, and scary. my guess is (total guess for the sake of making my point) my guess is that ed is using some but not all of his components and they do not jive with whatever else he is using. maybe that's what the frankenstrat sounds like when you plug it into an amp that's not dialed in to sound good with that guitar - and vice versa - ed's amp might sound awful with a guitar that sounds great through an AC30 or hiwatt or some other "normal" amp.
ying on good brethren!!

You'll find a no longer in production Double Whammy to be the best suited DiMarzio PAF for this.
Curt Mitchell comes extremely close with his chemistry of gear in his Instructional Vid.
There is a sound clip in my signature in which I A/B'd one with a Shredder using a
Line6 Guitar Port but will make time in the future to go through my Metro...

The double whammy to me is like the duncan custom custom which i dont care for, to muddy.I use the duncan 59, to me its very, very close to eds old tone i have tried many pickups and the duncan 59 is the pickup for me i even tried the duncan evh and i still like the duncan 59 i was just curious if anyone tried the dimarzio paf and if the tone of the dimarzio paf was like the duncan 59.

I am not a big Dimarzio fan. Having said that, any good pick-up will do for me(as long as they clean up well when rolling back the volume) There is however a basic "voice" to pick-ups, and all the Dimarzio's have a voice thats not to my liking, as compared say to Seymour Duncan, which all have that nice, sweet, warm tone. I tried the Super2 back around 89 or 90. It was the worst pick-up I've ever had. The Paf-pro and the Fred were about the best I've heard as far as Dimarzio goes. I think your '59 would kick the shit out of all the Dimarzio line though. Hey, you would probably really like a hybrid pick-up. JD knows all about them. That is what I'm going to try next.

I see a DP103 is what your talking about. Not just any D'Marzio PAF.nitro wrote:Have any of you tried the dimarzio paf to achieve van halens old sound, im curious of your thoughts thanks..............
I remember this one.. I didn't move me like the VITUAL series does.
As far as the PAF Pro & Fred, least of my favorites due to their thick coloring.
D's pickups just have too much coloring in general for that matter.
Here's a clip of Curt Using the DW. Not the best quality but serves the purpose...
I must say he does well with this and "achieves" the sound
He currently uses Duncan's BTW

the song is called "Tone Junkie" and if you ask Curt he would tell you that was a seymour duncan JB on the track. he would also tell ya he never had one.JimiJames wrote:I see a DP103 is what your talking about. IMO the JB gets closer to Ed's early sound (harmonics) than the SD Custom Custom or '59 (which IMO are both excellent pickups). Again, the closest I've heard that I have personally played is the hybrid. It's not as muddy or dark (compressed?) as the CC but not as bright and somewhat flat as the '59. It has alot of these interesting midrangey harmonics I haven't heard it out of another pickup other than the JB to a certain extent, although I find the JB just a bit too hot to get it right. That is through a Les Paul type guitar, both Marshalls and the Peavey 5150 amps, no effects or anything else.

It's funny how tone is so subjective. The JB is one of my least fav pups...I find it to be real muddy. At least it was in my Wayne Rock Star guitar...Great guitar, terrible pup.
I took a double whammy pup out of my Kramer and sold in on Fleabay not to long ago. It only sold for 25 bucks.. That wasn't a bad pup, I just wanted to try something else.
