Tune down 1/2 step.. Many people try to get the brown sound in standard tuning but if you listen to the first and second album its tuned down and it makes a big difference in how the amp responds...IMO

agreed.

And SRV, Thin Lizzy and many others. Somtimes you will need to go up a guage on the strings though.

Although ed didnt record with one until the Fair Warning album, I think that the Floyd Rose sound is very synonymous with the brown sound.

im not sure i agree - the brown tone i like to hear is with a stock fender tremolo.

Even on later recordings he would switch to the stock fender tremelo in the studio.

Yeah, that nice neck single coil funky, bluesy type stuff you were playin on that PPIMV sample is an example to me on why a fender type bridge just has more "sound" to it than a floyd. I guess Ed just gave in and went with it 'cause it really stayed in tune well and hell he was top dog usin it. I have adapted to floyds, but if I could keep the Fender bridge in tune( and the other guy's happy) I wouldnt be usin a Floyd. I whammy so much you see. If I didnt use one I would sound like a warped record. It's funny to me why Ed strayed from the Fender bridge. He stayed in tune while using it really well.

Well Ed used a floyd on the black and yellow strat on the second tour, as well as a bolt on neck flying star type guitar. He put a floyd on his #1 sometime on the third tour(pics show floyd, but no wedding band) He was married on 4-11-81, right after the recording of Fair Warning. The Floyd does have a unique wang bar sound. Listen to the ending of Mean Streets or the outro of Drop Dead Legs. There are definate tradeoffs.

i hear ya but again the brown sound i prefer is when he wasnt using the floyd. and probably when most go "i didnt like his tone as much there" - it was probably a floyd! again dont get me wrong i like it all - i just prefer the tone of a stock trem.
