ed's phase shifter

you all ever notice that ed's phase shifter never seems to dip down into that muddy area at "the bottom?"

it always sounds like it's up in that colorful top end area.

i wonder what's up with that - because i think it's a huge part of the color and expression you hear on the solos on the first album - and on VH II some - especially the solos on DOA - dag folks - that phaser is speaking van halenese.

what do you think they did to get the phaser to act like that?

It's just a phase 90 set to a slow sweep and a lighter depth...less depth, less drastic high/lows...what more is there?

so the sweep was modded?
is there an off-the-shelf phaser with a sweep like that?
[edit]
and should he go with caps or full blown dentures?
i guess yer right there's really nothing more.

Just buy an off-the-shelf phase 90 or EVH phase and keep the speed low and you should be fine. For some reason, when I replied earlier, I had it in my head that the pedal also had a depth control or something that controlled the wet/dry. If you still find the pedal too drastic in front of the amp, then you do a wet/dry amp set up. Line out of the dry amp > phase 90 > another amp. You could also mod the phaser I'm sure.

yeah i have one a re issue - the EVH re-issue with the red and white paint job - yeah, had to paint it black - showing up at a gig with brand new shiny eddie pedal would have been against everything i stand for - which is an incredibly focused list - it's close at the top - but when it dips down it's too much - i've heard boots where ed's sounds like that - it must be before whatever mod they did to keep it from dipping down so low - unless his setup just altered the effect in the context of his signal chain - you gotta put it before any boost yer using in front of the amp - anything you can do to disguise and limit the effect's pronounciveness so that it melds into the total sound and doesn't just sound like an effect stuck on the side of yer house with a big MXR logo on it - as with the rest of his stuff he had to take it into his realm until it became one with him customized beyond reproducability. the phase 90 isn't anywhere close to that in and of itself - it needs help - i'm surprised no one has at least attempted to reproduce it.

slightly over stated - excuse me - yer excused - dop-mess acthooo but scrooge liked it...

i thought about what nitro said about the speed - so i turned the speed all the way down - i always use it a very slow sweep but i never turn it all the way as slow as it will go - i used it a bunch on saturday like that and it made it more subtle like ed's - good call. and how 'bout that brunell ay? go skins.
