EVH MXR Phase 90 V. Re-Issue MXR Phase 90 etc. etc.

I have a re-issue MXR Phase 90 with the r-28, C11 & C12 taken out of the circuit to make it more a 'Script' sounding pedal. But still there's something missing in the sound...it's to dark sounding, no 'screaming / smooth' wave when playing solo's here.

This is my current gear:
Les Paul -> TC EQ Pedal -> Phase 90 (re-issue) -> EH Memory Man -> 'cranked to the max' Super Bass '67 Plexi with 4x12 Checkerboard Cab (GM25 'blackbacks') / '64 VOX TB Ac-30

I notice the pedal''s sweep is somewhat off...it's to dark. I quess not tight and musical warm. I tried adjusting the sweep but it didn't make much of a difference either.

Now, I've also owned a Script original Phase 90. But maybe the pedal didn't sound like it should cause I didn't quite liked it. Maybe got a worned out pedal with some bad / aged components in it.So I'm looking for another.

BUT what about the EVH Phaser? Reading the reviews on Harmony Central it's supposes to be good. Anybody here tried it? Maybe someone with a set-up almost the same like mine? Like to hear what you think of it before I buy one!

PS Anybody tried the re-issue Script Logo from MXR?
Man, why don't they just make 1 awesome Phase instead of 4 different ones

these clips were done with the EVH phase 90 set to "script" - the amp, '68 spec 1959, is a little blown out sounding because i was messing with some other component values - but at least it'll give you a chance to hear the phaser in action.

of note:
there is a small adjustment screw in the unit and you can mess with it to change the feel of the phase - if you want to mess with it, mark exactly where the factory setting is before you move it - it's very sensitive - really changes the sound of the phase big time - for peace of mind you will want to know how to get it back to factory - i left mine just slightly off where the factory setting is because it seemed to make the effect slightly more subtle - which, to my ear, is a good thing.

It doesn't sound like a good Script logo. But it will get you buy...It is too bright for me...

Dunlop is now selling a custom shop Script Logo Phase 90 for 99 bucks....It is now for sale at all the online music stores....Musicians Friend...etc.

I don't know how that sounds though...they are still way new..

My Script Phase 90 is worn out too...Looking for a few caps to resolder in...That is pretty easy to do on those because they are not PCB's.

I have a Reissue MXR Phaser and a EVH Phaser. I like the EVH better, but the other one aint bad. I got it for $40.

Hey Rgalpin, I really liked the feel of the phase on the 2nd clip.

Any pictures of your settings maybe? Indeed the Phase sound on your clips sound great!

@mightymike; I also like the EVH better than the MXR Re-issue.

The "custom shop" reissue MXR script logo and "regular" block logo versions are electronically identical - only the cosmetics are different.......

Hi Mike...I wasn't sure you understood...maybe I don't...We were not talking about the reissue Phase 90's here...Dunlop has a new custom shop reissue..Script Logo including the Script logo on the top of the unit.

i believe the new script reissue is the same board as the evh, just different casing. obviously set to vintage mode though

Dude! Don't do it. That is a bias control for the fet's. Screwing with it will screw the thing up. Biasing these correctly, once you play around with that pot, is beyond the scope of most diy'ers.

The new phase 90s and as far back as the late 70's units sound very different than the early script model. You can shitcan the dreaded feedback resistor, but the chips are different. The new units are totally different with jfet opamps, making them sound brittle and sterile.

If you want the real deal, either buy a 70's script. Or, find a mid-70's block 6-chiper and remove the feedback resistor.
