EVH guitar neck
Never hear much about the specs of his necks.
Anyone know the radius or the back contour of his frankenstrat? I'm pretty sure it was raw wood. How about nut width etc,? Seems like it might just be a starndard strat since it was from a parts bin?

You may find some info if you dig a bit on the Warmoth site..They talk about neck contours and fret sizes ect for the Wolfgang,Clapton and SRV necks..I remember reading years ago about the specs of one of EVH's necks..It may have been the Kramer though..I'll let ya know if I find it..Randy

back in the 1982's i built a charvel guitar, body and neck. of course i had found what Ed did so i was one to follow. i dont know exact specs but the neck does not feel anything like a strat. flat and wide with jumbo frets. a flatter fingerboard than standard strat or something. no finish. of course later on when i played his music man guitar that thing feels more like broom stick to me with jumbo frets and no finish.
i imagine it would be kewl to play the guitars released from Charvel as of lately. apparently Ed supervised the builds as they are replicas of his early guitars.

back in like '81 i bought a boogie bodies strat for $75 in a pawn shop, i'd heard that he used one of their bodies or necks? can't remember, long time ago! it went through hell, but still survives to this day. (note: excuse pedal in background)

If I remember correctly Edward had a brass nut on his original Frankenstrat...obviously before he had a Floyd installed, and the red paint added. I just remember him saying in interviews that it was a really wide fingerboard, close to a classical guitar.
Why is it we can remember where all the wires go, but can never find a pick?

hi. newbie here... found the site from reading ed's wikipedia page. anyway, i have owned/own 3 of ed's necks. one came with a guitar that paul unkert built at kramer with a blue headstock, one is his pacer neck from the US festival/jump video, and the other is a back-up 5150 nana neck of his that unkert built. the blue headstock neck and backup 5150 neck are the same. very VERY thin profiled. for you evh/kramer geeks out there, yes i know paul unkert stopped working for Kramer in 82, so my 5150 back-up was made obviously before the 5150 was ever thought of. nonetheless, the design is the same. im sure billy connely mappped it out the same when he made ed's other 5150 necks. the pacer neck is fat. and i mean FAT. classical neck profile with a thin back. and it was finished. that is directly opposite of what ed has said he preferred in necks. im looking at it right now as we speak and am cursing it because its such a bitch to play! lol. anyway, thats all i know. thought i would share. i also know a few things about his pickup specs if anyone is interested. btw, great site! lots of info!

I remember Chris ****** telling me something about the neck having a skunk stripe on the back, because of the way the truss rod is installed or something. I know Warmoth has built many. I know my HM series Strat has a Skunk stripe and that wide neck thing going.
Back in the 80's, I allways thought it was a Charvel neck, because I saw a guy playing Eruption and Spanish fly at a party in the SF Valley, and he had built a custom built EVH guitar, and was playing it so perfect that it sounded good through a couple NON MXR pedals, through a PIG nose of all things. WTF? That still amazes me to this day, and proved to me a lot of the tone is in your hands. looking back, what get's me is the way he was able to clean up when rolling of the volume on the guitar.. I didn't think SS amps can do that, but back then I didn't know any better back then. This was like 1980 or 1981, VH 2 was still new at the time.
I remember to this day what he said he used
Strat Body
Charvel Neck
SD SH5 pickup whisch is probably pretty close to what SD EVH used.
Same family
The guys playing was so dead on though, that maybe I was deceived.
He could have probably sounded like EVH through a Gorilla. Some guys are just that good. Must be nice.
It was so inspiring, it made me take up the guitar later that year. It was like having EVH sit next to you on the couch and play.

They sure can! I had an old Vox Cambridge Reverb years ago and I remember being amazed at how good it sounded when you ran it on ten and used your guitar volume to control your sound.mightymike wrote:what get's me is the way he was able to clean up when rolling of the volume on the guitar.. Had to sell it because the damn thing kept trying to electrocute me.
