ELECTRO HARMONIX BIG BOTTLE 6CA7

Post by nitro » Mon Apr 03, 2006 7:24 pm

Hello everybody im a new member to this great site anyway im a big fan of the old van halen sound and i was wondering about your thoughts on the ehx big bottle 6ca7 tubes i just blew my last quad of sylvania 6ca7 which were in my amp a very long time i decided not to go nos anymore because its getting to be very expensive and extremely hard to find match quads of the sylvania 6ca7 tubes. I was listening to some of vholoics sound clips and they sound very good . In my opinion the sound clips that came from his 5150 amp sound extremely close to the old van halen sound and the tubes in that amp are 6L6. Ive always believed that the big bottled tube like the 6ca7 was closer to the old van halen then the el34. The big bottled tube sounds more open then the el34 and we all know that eddie used and liked the big bottle 6ca7. Anyway thanks for your time. In my next post i will share some of my conversations i had in the 80s with jose arredondo, i would talk to jose on a weekly basis a couple times a month he was i very nice guy to talk to until his death.

I don't know about the EH brand but I just picked up a set of 6CA7 Sylvania's for my 50 watter. Easier to find a pair then an quad.

My fav tube is the EH el-34, but I recently tried a quad of the EH 6ca7's. They are cool and sound solid with lots of low end, but less interesting in terms of harmonics than the el34 .

I have not had a good experience with any EH tubes. So Im not going to input my thoughts about them.
