Van Halen's Recording Preamp

Post by Bainzy » Mon Mar 06, 2006 2:11 pm

I've heard this is what Van Halen used when making the early albums.

Of those of you here that are into copping VH tone, building one of these would be a nice addition to your setup.

Looks good...how do you power up one if you are building one of those?

I'd gladly help you with a project like that Mike - I'm pretty new to trying different preamps, so I'd like to build one and compare it with others (eg. Neve 1272).

Those preamps are really cool, for sure, and Brent's work is excellent. But I can't help but be reminded of what Flames said a while back when he said EVH never really liked his recorded sound that much on those early records. He apparently thought it was too bright?

I think that's to do with the way the guitar was EQ'd at the desk - you can definately hear added frequencies. Something like 1400hz and 2900hz :?

Boy would that be a cool project.
My plate is full (4 amps on the bench right now)
Then I'm gonna do your mod
The Mic Preamps after that, and I have the same attitude.
Try em all.

Yeah I'm concentrating on saving for power scaling at the moment. After that I really wanna get a decent preamp(s), but I'll also be looking at new speakers / sozo 'vintage' upgrade / getting a synth.

Definatly on the to-do list, as well as one of those pedals you built.

It's not a preamp like a Marshall JMP-1 etc, it's the preamp from a recording desk. This is what the studio will have had (x however many tracks) inside the desks.

And if you go even further in this forum you will see George made a couple already and even recorded samples of them.
