Double Variac Vids through different amps and guitars

Post by mightymike » Sun Oct 18, 2015 11:15 am

Taken on my old Samsung S4 phone. The Superlead clipped the audio on some vids.

JNEW's 50 watt

1968 Superlead #12369

1968 Super PA that we converted to SL Spec

Here's JNEW playing my project guitar. Northern Ash Body, Gotoh 1996t Trem, and Black Belt 2 pickup through a Double Variac'd 68 Super PA that sounded flubby and clean before we converted it to Superlead spec and put some killer tubes. It clipped my phone audio. But you can hear the good stuff through it.

If you notice less feedback it's because the volume on all these clips were around 5, with the bass cranked. Verses Volume cranked and Bass at 2ish like I usually play.

All the amps sound kick ass!

The Super Lead sounds huge! :champ:

What speakers are in the cab?

Also, how does the 2 variac thing work? Can you put it in, as Ed would say, 2-year old speak?

All these were played through JNEW'S 4X12 Basket weave cab loaded with Scumback 20 watt 75hz speakers. I had my Blackback cab there, but none of the videos were taken with it. It sounded really good too.

This was the first time I ever heard Scumback Speakers and wow they won me over. If I already didn't have basket weave cab at home with Pre Rola G12h30s, I would get a cab just like this. I like JNEW'S amp so much, I just bought a Staked JTM45 Paxolin Perf board for a future Black Flag 50 watt build.

The Variac between cab and speaker seems to add reasonance among other things.

All we used on these clips waz a home brew EP3 Pre amp that is kickass. It doesn't have compression, but does color the tone and cut noise if other pedal are used. JNEW did a great job on that and a lot of other tools he made. Dude has been busy.

There might be one video with Delay. Trying to remember. Other that that just striaght into his EP3 PEDAL into amp

I'm listening to these clips and that 68 PA is groing on me. It sounded like dog doo earlier that day.
What a relief that it made such a great turn around.

Wow, yes all these amps have "it" and sound great, thanks for the clips. When does the Mighty-Mike Tour of goodies stop by Northern CA

the 4th clip is a little hotter and a little leaning toward a "generic metal" sound by comparison. could be a lot of factors contributing to that associated with the phone mic, placement in the room etc.. although i do love the idea of capturing the tone in the room on a phone - nowhere to hide with that technique!! but am i reading the labels correctly that the 4th clip is JNEW's build from scratch? and the other clips are vintage amps "refurbished" more or less?

the striking thing to me is the clarity of tone on single string notes played on the unwound strings - G B E - the STING! man, that's the stuff! first noted in the (guitar on 10 section) of Women In Love riffage. Exquisite! :champ: i need a cork-sniffing emoticon with pinky extended!

The Woman in Love clip is the 50 watt amp JNEW Built. I restrung over the tail piece on that Destroyer and that's why that high E harmonic was giving him a dead out. That clip is my favorite of the day. Pretty badass hombrew i need to restring it the way it was setup. That guitar was owned by a guy they called the Japanese Van Halen.

The 4th clip down is the same 1968 amp as in the 3rd clip. But the phone is clipping bad. I think we turned it up on that clip.

They're sending me to Oxnard to get an Iowa run. I need an Ego Waffle run from San Jose to Calgary so I can visit Efraser and Kevin.

I came down I5 from Oregon to LA, but I know that's a drive.

Yes, unfortunately I'm out of any delays so there were none available. I'm trying to decide on either the Belle Epoch or the Danelectro Reel Echo that Phil has demonstrated so well. Next time Mike comes through, I'll have something. The only delay you recall Mike, is the delay I had going when I was demonstrating that really clean stereo chorus going on the stereo cab. No Marshall's for that stuff. Just the Stereo Chorus through the Classic 50/50 Power Amp. I don't think we taped any of that stuff. 8)

Mapat, we made up some cables for Mike to be able to use for his Variac between head and cab trick. We should have done a little tutorial on that Mike. Lots of PM's on this issue. I made a short 7 minute vid but can't seem to upload it to YouTube. When I get that figured out, I'll share the link. 8)
