Stan Spec or Scumback?
Hello all,
I have the first Mod 5 that Rockstah built for a customer. I play it through a Marshall 412 slant loaded with 4 Weber 1225 Stan Spec speakers. I think it sounds killer as is, but I've read a lot of reviews where folks just love the Scumback M75 65 watters.
You can hear Mark playing my amp and speakers here, titled "Plexi Mod 5 break in"
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default ... ID=1160846
Do you think swapping 2 or 4 of the Webers for Scumbacks would be a worthwhile change for me? Jim is offering a really good sale, so I've been tempted to try them.
Opinions?
Thanks,
Brad

Re: Stan Spec or Scumback?
I know folks will get weird on it but pretty much any 25w greenback does it.
Mark used celestion greenback reissues made in england with the 6402 cone codes.
I have 53 H1777 codes and made in england reissues-not changing them.
FWIW mark sold his blackbacks in favor of the reissues he used.
Sumback m75's, reissue made in englands 6402's or 1777's, new heritage 25's-don't get to wound up into the speaker thing too badly. You really don't have to spend alot of $$$.
Its not THAT critical as some make out.
Stan spec I think rgalpin is using-check out his latest "variac a plexi"
I think far too many people get all spun up on the speaker deal.
Then also refer to Georges speaker shootout here and put the headphones on.
And when you still can't decide? Remember you can put 4 totally different 25w in one cab to make sure your getting all the bases covered

Re: Stan Spec or Scumback?
I have a combo of the Stan specs and the Scumback BM75 that sounds good.
Better yet, get another cabinet and put more speakers in it!

Re: Stan Spec or Scumback?
Thanks for the replies, gents. I picked up a couple gently used Scumback M75-PVCs for a killer deal. I'll let you know what I think when they arrive. I'm also looking for some clips of Jim's BM75s. Jim says that's the speaker for EVH. If they sound good, I'll pick up some of those before the sale is over.
Thanks,

Hmm, I had a quad of the Webers and a quad of the Scumm's at the same time. Now I only have and use Scumm's.
That's almost like saying any 4X12 cab will do.

Re: Stan Spec or Scumback?
Rgalpin was usin a 2x12 from what I understand. So I would say not so much a huge neccassity judging from what I heard there. I think there are differences but they are so subtle between speakers sometimes its not gonna make or break your entire tone. George did the shootout. Nothing crazy drastic happened until he used those Austins I think they were called. Those were what I would call "noteably different" to a much higher degree than the differences between the rest of the speakers.
I am fine with my cab. I did play a really thrashed out incredibly dingy old vintage greenback cab with original speakers and the mids seemed more accentuated and vocal but not by much. Again woulda been nice but not enough to lay out the cash as it wasn't making or breaking for me. And the cab was only $900. Wasn't gonna change my life.
Even Ed used those old weird ass Flag Systems cabs.
If you are gonna be so anal then Ed never used scumback. He used blackbacks. And if you look on craigslist Detroit metro area has 2 original 78 blackback all original cabs. You don't see me runnin my ass down there beatin the door down to get them. Just sayin......

Re: Stan Spec or Scumback?
The speakers are the vocal chords for your amp. (as is the enclosure) If that's not a big deal to you or you like to play that part of the equation loosey goosey, then that's cool. Myself, I have had probably every variation of Greenback's a couple times over again. And H-30's as well, 65's, 70's, 75's, V30's, EV's, shit man, too many to go on. I don't think saying any 25 watt will do the trick as a sort of dismissal. Sure, it will be on the right track but I would encourage people should listen to as many as they can, especially with their own amp.

Re: Stan Spec or Scumback?
With their own amp? Yes. Look at how many clips over the years here with various speakers and amp tweaks. To me its still pretty broad in the choices available. I like my chinese reissues especially for that ac/dc house is on fire tone. But they weren't as good for vh as my current english reissue h1777's (which many scoff at). But they could do a better vh than the H30's vic swears by. I hated those 30's. Its for sure kinda like tubes almost. Never know what you might find.

Stan=BMF5150 whom is a member here. Special doping on the speaker or no doping.... I can't remember exactly what it was about the "stan spec" but it had something to do with "pre rola" celestion history production method.

Re: Stan Spec or Scumback?
Stan is a long time member here at Metro. I don't know where he came up with the specs but one could safely assume he acquired them through either Jim Seavall or some other reputable source for Celestion spec's (Maybe Ted Weber) Then he had Weber build them accordingly. I've had two sets of quads of them over the years. I would say one quad was good and the other were very good. For the $, it's real hard to beat. The best (and this is only my opinion) are the Scummbag PVC 20 watters for hardly any more $. Bottom end is better and the clarity/detail puts them above all else. My 2nd choice are Celestions with the 6402 cones (really nice) followed by 70's Blackbacks.
