Without a doubt, that is the CLOSEST I've heard anyone get to 'specifically' Mark A's (rip) MOD5 tone :champ:

NICE JOB TERRY  (Love the riffs too man :rocker: )

Lord have mercy guys that thing sound great! I have to get my hands on a Mod 5. I have been reading the mod pages on here (and elsewhere) for a while now and my head is spinning with all the info.

I have been looking at everything under the sun in this tone range and a Mod 5 is the one! Will I have to build one myself? I have been looking on e bay for one to no avail.

Thanks for any thoughts on the matter

Sorry I disagree, it does not sound like a Mod 5. I like the playing though.

I'm sure you know that buying the parts would run around $1400 to do it right. You should go for it. Start a thread and ask lots of questions, post pics of your progress. The mod5 is easy, that is, if you still want it after hearing what a non-master marshall clone sounds like. Most guys are ripping out there Lar/Mars these days.

I think its pretty sweet tone. Almost verging on a Outta the Cellar tone in spots but comin back browner.
never the less its pretty tasty tone no matter what.

Thanks for the comments, and welcome to the forum, looks like this was your first post. Very rarely you can find a Mod 5 that Mark did and if you do they want a lot for them!

:toast:
thanks Strat78 its a very easy tone to play with.
no bright cap used.
Your right about anything over the 100pf makes it bright and brittle. I think i read somewhere where Mark posted that also, but not sure.

Oops, I meant to say the mix cap. Terry, did you build this amp from the ground up? Where did you place the dual pot? Just wondering, because I put my last Lar/Mar in the presence spot and hard wired the presence cap and a 5k resister internally. Ran all the ppimv wires under the board, nice and neat and no noise problems either! :toast:

Yes, its a ground up build.
The "Bright CH Mix Cap", i have a 470pf in there right now, am going to lower that to the 100pf and and see what she sounds like.

I put the PPIMV on the back. I think putting it like you did on the front in place of the presence pot is so convenient! I put the PPIMV on my '87 50w marshall on the front and love it like that.

Here's a link to a few pics of it:

Nice to see the build pics. Love the 70's style head cab! Yeah, the 100pf should be noticeable, but that is with the standard cascade, mod 5: 25uf V2A etc? -lets see if you like it. If it is not a cascade the 470pf would be the best choice. I'm not saying you need to improve the tone at all, I'm just trying to calibrate my ears with what I think is going on in your build especially the mixer area. :D

Thanks :toast:

It is a 2203 (cascade).

The head cab is from Bob over at sour mash cabs, love his work.

The setting for the clip i posted are: Preamp 6, Master Vol 1, PPIMV 4, Presence 10, Bass 7, Middle 5, Treble 9. There is still a ton of gain left in the amp.

Yes, looks very nice. I do think that Mark used a lower mixer value. You can use a basic R-C calculator to see what different values do for you.

What transformers are you using?
