Friedman mod and cab.

Post by jnew » Tue Dec 10, 2013 9:19 am

My good friend took his Handwired plexi to Dave Friedman recently and Dave did his magic. He also bought a Friedman cab which was loaded with Chinese Greenbacks on top and Vintage 30's on the bottom. Sweet Jeezus. I was immensely impressed with this amp and cab. It was very thick and perhaps a little too bottom heavy (for my liking) in its tone but had a cut and punch that was truly eye opening. I mean, this thing straight SMASHED. It was awesome. We didn't have a lot of time together so we didn't open up the amp but we'll get around to that at some point. It did have a master. That cab is a beautiful piece of work too, BTW. 8)

Jerry Cantrell's half stack :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

JC uses 2 4x12s, one with greenies and another with V30's... 2 friedmans called "mad" and "pissed"... Pissed has more gain and runs the V30 cab....

I had a 2x12 with V30's and the punch is awesome.. Been thinking to get another 2x12 with them to put on the top of my 4x12....

What mod did he do to this amp in particular Jnew?

Didn't look inside the amp because we were limited with time so I can't report on it. Next time I go over there, I'll probably have more time and I'll take a look. My friend who owns it knows nothing about building amps so he wouldn't know. I will say in advance though that if I see something outside of all that has been talked about on these forums over the years, I'll have to keep quiet about it until or unless I get an OK from Dave himself. The decent thing to do at the humanity level here is honor the livelihood of a much respected talent in this arena. I'm sure you guys understand this. 8)

of course man! Sorry for my bad english, actually I just asked what mod did your buddy paid for (DF has a menu, like BE, HBE, JBE, Kicthen Sink, etc etc...)

Just wanted to know what food he ordered :wink:

This exchange is killing me.. if we were in 2010 I'd buy a metal panel JMP at ebay and sent over to him right away! :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

Cantrell and EVH are my faves so an amp that can do both... well.... :rock: :rock: :rock:

Thanks guys. I believe he has the BE mod. Also the amp had a Mercury ot and choke when he brought it to me. Amp sounded cool when done.

Yeah, that sounds like the right amp as I know it had MM's iron from the guy who worked on it previous. Great job on that amp Dave. The V-30/Greenback combo was very interesting too. I would never have expected what I heard. :thumbsup:

:thumbsup: :thumbsup:

About MM iron... I've tested a voodoo modified JTM45 (jose / hi gain jose) with an MM OT .... compared with a 2204 from the same guy (stock) and my amp, I found out the MM to be too dry in the low end IMO.... My JMP has stock iron (don't know what it is though, it's 1976) and the same with the 78 2204, and both sounded smoother, even under more gain than the JTM in the settings. Not sure if I would use MM iron after that....
Didn't hear your buddy's amp though, beleave it rocked out loud :rock: :rock: :rock:

I'll send an amp to Dave one of these days for sure.... just waiting for the $$$ to come over :lol: :lol:

Hmm. Well, my main plexi has a MM Opt Trans and my recent (and best sounding clips) are telling me, they're just fine. :D Hear it for yourself:

It's interesting to see that Dave and Cameron Amps use Anniversary g12h30/V30 loaded 4x12 cabs. Back in 2005 I ordered a Basketweave Bottom Cab from Avitar with that combo in an X pattern which was their most popular order. I remember that full tone, but I was on the Plexi chase and landed a quad 1972 g12h30 with pre-rola parts, and sold off the v30s.

I remember that setup had a really unique full tone, great feedback, and playing a Jb equiped Swamp Ash Strat to Jtm45/100 to that cab was a huge sound. That being said, I'm suprised, but understand why they are now being used with the higher gain Brown Eye and Cameron stuff.

You're already getting gobs of gain out of the circuit, you don't need as much breakup as 25 watters. Now I wish I kept those speaker, so I could test them with my higher gain projects.

Makes sense no doubt but the speaker breakup is a huge part of that "on the edge" tone. Which I'm sure is the reason for keeping two of them in there. And on the top mind you. The V-30's are just giving the overall cab a shit tone of punch and thump. Just realized the sensitivity on those things are 100dB. Very efficient and would overwhelm greenies in no time flat if in a top position. Overall, a stomping cab tone for sure. :D

Are they still making the Anniversary g12h30? They're a good deal, but wasn't the Anniversary almost 10 years ago?

it's on the website

http://celestion.com/product/17/g12h_anniversary/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

so, I think its a Yes!

A few interesting speakers has been up now, I have missed these

http://celestion.com/product/141/g12h75_creamback/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://celestion.com/product/123/g12m65_creamback/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://celestion.com/product/142/vtype/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This last one looks like a crossing between the greenback and V30... interesting.. :scratch: :scratch:
About the high powred Hs and Ms, well I think they have been looking into Mr Scumback's work, aren't they?
