Attempt at EVH Plexi Build - Clips!

So this is my first kit. Complete and functioning Mojo kit with Marstran Transformers. I read many a thread on EVH type builds and have started modding my way there one bit at a time. So far the only thing left is to change the filtering from stock 69' to 68' and perhaps get a Variac. Its not exact but I it's a lot closer than the Marshal 1959SLX I played. I think switching out the Tads for Mustards or Vintage Sozos will take the edge off. Any suggestions are welcome.

I used:
RIP Custom Guitars KV
Instrumental Comet Duster Pickups AlNiCo 8.8k
Two SM57's
MW Audio Assembled CAPI VP312 with gar2520 DOA
PreSonus FireStudio Mobile Interface
PreSonus StudioOne V2Prof
80hz HPF and a touch of reverb.

Very nice!
I guess the amp was seriously loud during the recording?
I'd think about leaving the higher filtering in - sounds chunky and tight

Actually it has a Larmar PPIMV and variable NFB. I have a triple gang pot on the way. I'm going to set it up to increase NFB as i turn down the MV.

It was at about vol 4 on the MV, so a little loud but not ear bleeding. That was through a 4x12 w/ V30's.

Good work on that! Drop your screens down to 32uf for starters, it's a little hard around the edges still. Do you have a bright cap on the 1m pot? Sounds like with a couple of well placed mustards and a good amount of burn in time, that amp will be there!
Edit: oh, it has a ppimv. That's still pretty chunky for a idling power section.

Your going in the right direction.

If you want classic VH, you have to pull out that MV. Turn everything on 10, tweak the flavor as you figure out how to tame the volume. Slaving, variac etc...

Power tubes sucking the volts from the PT is where the secret is.

Might want to consider migrating away from the V30's too. :what:

Nice tone and playing  I think your pretty much there. I agree about a couple of well placed caps, but not necissarily mustards. A ppimv on 4 is plenty loud, so the amp was definately at a good heart rate,so to speak. Drop the screens liked reccomended. I think that your recording process could also be brought a little closer to the mark. As far as taking out your PPIMV, I'd try it with an attenuator. Dime the ppimv as well as every other knob :D through an attenuator (or without). Take note of how it sounds (record for future reference). Then, take the ppimv out, do the same thing (dime the amp). If there is no discernable tone/sound difference, then by all means put the ppimv back in there,as it gives great flexibility on the fly.

No bright cap on this build, I didn't even put it on in the first place. I'm planning on ordering some 32uf's and getting a greenback 4x12 here soon. I also feel like the bass on the low e, open through third fret, is pretty flabby in a bad way. Any tips for tightening it up?

Here are the changes as it stands now:
1.1/.68 V1
1.1/330 V2
100fp PI Cap
33k/500 Tone (I tried the 57K/250 and it was really bad sounding on this amp)
47K 8 Ohm Tap
Larmar PPIMV w/ Variable NFB

You mentioned recording techniques. What would you suggest? I had a SM57 straight on the dust cap and the second one next to it 45deg off axis on the same speaker. I also chose the best sounding speaker in the cab.

For the low E 'flub' try 2.7k instead of the 1.1k on v1 and try a 47pf 500v ceramic PI cap. As for the recording of it, just mess around with the distance from speaker, angle and how close/far from center to the outside of the cone, etc. I'm just learning alot about this myself.

I did the 2.7k on V1 and it is way better. I left the PI the same for now. I will shoot another clip here soon. I built a bass pedal style midi controller (ala Moog Tarus) and have been working on doing a Unchained cover with some synth bass pedaling.

I haven't gotten to doing clips as of yet because I received a new table saw for Christmas and was busy making a head shell! I used the outer dimensions from Marshall's site and then just figured the rest on my own from images. 3/4" Birch ply for the box, 1/2" for the face and back. I know that the color probably isn't everyone's cup of tea. Loud amp loud colors! I do want some mirror face plates and black chicken heads on it.

I'd also like to thank the forum for the help and answering questions I had. This place is a very valuable resource and I wouldn't have done it without you duders! I'll shoot those new clips soon.
