I agree, great tone there for sure I didnt see the pilot light on his 12xxx though.Maybe it was out. He had to have been re-amping there, cause volume was an issue . The set up he used to re-amp must have been key,cause modern day reamping I've heard doesnt sound like that.

Didn't look like his cab was mic'ed either.

The top right speaker looks like it is mic'ed up to me. The quality of the video makes it difficult to see.

For once I can say I would trade places with Paul Shafer just to have been there to eye f it all and be in the room.

Standard tuning too, I believe. Great tone. No effects either. Or none that I could hear. Great amp.

It does seem very bare bones stripped down tone no fx and thats cool how he made it sound so full and alive just straight up straight in. Ala Angus Young style.
I remember this show from when I was a kid when it originally aired. Man the
80's were sooooo much better-life was simple compared to today. I guess the 80's will be like my parents 50's memories.
But on the 95 Balance record they come back to Letterman and Letterman just bugs out over all Ed's gear and quips " wow look at all that! Hey Eddie... why don't you get some more gear?!" Lmao!!

I agree, we know he did NOT have that beast dimed without some sort of anttenuator!
It would have drowned out that whole band!

I believe the answer to the volume issue in that session was just what he stated in the Esquire interview regarding how he was using a variac to control his volume.

Here's the quote: "So, my Variac, my variable transformer was my volume knob. Too loud, [makes knob turning sound] I'd lower it down to 50."

and: "Well, it enabled me to turn my amp all the way up, save the tubes, save the wear and tear on the tubes, and play at clubs at half the volume."

Anyone else notice the way he's holding the pick at around 0:36? Thumb and index finger, not middle, as far as I can tell.
