Super 70s - second look

Post by YMI5150? » Sun Sep 15, 2013 7:11 pm

pretty caught up on my projects but decided to do a pup swap on my b&w franky. it had a custom custom and sat for months. just never moved me tonewise. i threw a super 70s back in and holy crap. that coupled with the EP 3 pedal is money.

Nice! Mids and highs and sizzle are all good, but missing some low end and some low mids, when compared to the "jbl" iso clip or Ralle's RWTD clip. The 250K guitar volume pot would make it thicker sounding and IMO closer to recorded tone.

I'm getting very good results with a 250K guitar volume pot (bourns), I was a 500K user until 3 weeks ago. I got much much closer first with the " secret part" and then with a 250K pot.
These 2 little tweaks move the mids (and everything else for that matter) right back in 1977. I think you should give it a try with this guitar and pickup. No tone pot.
I wonder what pots Ibanez was using in 70's destroyers. Gibson was using 300k's...

The Super 70 sounds like it has great mids and not too much gain or hair. Don't think we've heard clips of the SH-5 that were head turning (that I can remember).

this pup has been tried before and didnt fair well with my rig. you have to work a lot harder and there's less sizzle. However with the combination of that and EP Pre, its excellent. its a bit drier and cleans up well for an A8 (i believe).

added a Gibson 300k pot. Dont hear a huge difference but the low end being a little tubbier than a MM 1300 makes it perfect for the second record. this is with EP Pre. I just got Presonus and am struggling to avoid wobble and other artifacts. if i increase input signal too much it gets tinny so some of the high end is artificial.

Not a HUGE difference and that's the point of the "tweak". To make it just a little rounder-fuller and sweeter -
I like it (250k-300k) with a stock DSD (Ralle's and Strat78's clips and posts about the 250k's made me try it, finally).

I can't open the file BTW Error (403)

I had a Destroyer with Super 70s. They are hot-sounding (but not compressed) and have that VH1 "over the top-ness." Definitely different, were not my thing but can hear Ed in them.

I like this one much better than the previous one. You achieved that "amp's about to explode" fuzzy grind :toast:

Not really digging the sounds in these clips I'm afraid. I have heard some clips from Phil (Strat78) and others with the Super 70s that sound closer. I hate being negative, but I just don't hear the sizzle and there just seems to be something else missing...

I will freely admit that the Super 70s sound better than I first gave them credit for when played through the great amps that the "Tone Summit" crew have to work with. They really don't work at all with a Mod 5...again, the DSD is the magic pickup for the Mod 5 in my well and truly humble opinion. But if you have a fire breathing "big boy" amp set up, the Super 70 can work.

Interesting and valid point. My experienced was you had to have the amp cranked to get the b*lls outta the Super 70s.

What I have generally found is that a weaker hb'er can give an amp a touch of articulation,if said amp is super hi gain . Super hi gain circuits with real stiff filtering can benifit from say a '59 (low output obviously), cause the thinner width of sound in a low k hb'er articulates the tone a bit in the higher gain settings. Modern multi gain stage amps have HUGE control of eq, so, they actually perform quite well by not hitting thier inputs too hard , so a weaker pu performs well in them. Imo,1959,1987, 2203, 2204 spec amps (2 or 3 gain stagers) benifit from a more powerful pu,especially one with a ceramic magnet, cause the filtering on alot of these builds (mine for ex.) isnt so stiff,so you get that hair more 'compressed control' with ceramic. I love an A2 magnet for its warmth, but, when dialing in certain things like hardness and sizzle in these circuits (1959/2203),a ceramic magnet works wonders. Like Garbeaj mentioned, a DSD is hard to beat in the bridge spot of a strat through the afforementioned circuits .
