A new clip to try my theory
Well... here's a clip of this old song... I've been intreaged by the info about the non typical stock parts in Ed's amp...
First I want to say there's one thing about the speqs I got from someone I prommissed I wouldn't spread around... and I intend to keep that prommise... but that's just one part... and I'm sure many of you allready know about it, so...
The rest is all my own discovery... so I'm free to tell about it...
The speqs I have here is me moving away from the typical 12 serie speqs... this is more like an ordinary superlead... part from the NFB wich still is 27k/16ohm...
The rest is as follows:
V1: split cathods; 2.7k/.68u v1b, and 820 ohm/250u v1b
mixer: 470k,470/500pF
v2: 820/.68u,
tonestack: 33k/556pF
PI: input cap; 44 nF, the first none typical part ( 47nF might be a more common value, but I didn't have that, so I just threw another .022 cap over the first one )
Bias circut: nothing strange about it; 220k, 22nF PI couplings... normal presence; .1u/5k pot
NFB: like I said; 27k/16ohms.
The seccond none typical part: that's the secret I prommised not to talk about
I can say this much... 2.7k in v1b is a must if the secret thing is in... wich I belive is one of the two non typical stock parts...
The other non typical stock part would be the bigger PI input cap... I should allso say that this is just something I DON'T have ANY proof of what so ever...
So, two things: the icreased value on the PI input cap + this secret part... I'm going with the stock value for the brightcap, and not like I said in the other thread ( the added part in Eddies amp )...
I hope you don't get pissed at me for keeping that secret to my self... since I made a prommise... But nobody can keep you from searching for it...
Oh, I forgot... this my Gibson LP 1960 Classic loaded with the 500t ceramic pu...

Re: A new clip to try my theory
I like 12nF (0.01uf) for the V1b plate coupling cap, instead of the typical lead value of 2.2nF- it adds bass to the lead channel and is more woody sounding, but still "lead-like" . I am going to try a 4.7nf too
The mixer cap (something like 700-1000pf) is another "secret" spot
Another great clip, Ralle

Of course, nicely done Ralle. In terms of the PI cap, I think that is just making it closer to a super bass spec, no? What it appears is happening is that you are adding in more frequencies into the power section of the amp, right?Ralle wrote:Well... here's a clip of this old song... Are we suppose to guess about the "secret thing"? Could it be the cap on the presence control?

Re: A new clip to try my theory
Increasing the PI input cap doesn't really make it sound more like superbass... there's still the .022 output couplings...
The guessing... well... it feels kinda hard not to tell, but that would mean I have to breake a prommise I made to someone...
By saying there is a secret part, means that there is one , and it's possible for you guys to find it... if you really look real hard...
Again, this is not carved in stone... but I do belive that these speqs brings out the genuine charactaristics from Ed's sound...
I'm thinking this clip is with the 2 none typical, stock parts... but without the added part... I've tryied the 10-12 nF in the lead channel... and it sounds really good, actually... so good that I would put my vote on that one as the added part...

Re: A new clip to try my theory
Hard to believe you ever had that amp cascaded, but the core meat of that amp seems to always be there no matter what you do to it, truly fantastic. I would like to year it with more on the mix cap just for reference sake. I've been on a similar quest and just when I was going to pop in a 1000pf mixer, I switched from the pre rola/6402 4X12 to the 70's black backs and there was the treble I had been looking for. Funny, but the H75 type cones did nothing for me this time around...........but all this is neither here nor there. Still, these 12xxx type amps are giant distortion boxes and it seems that simply dialing around the two volume knobs gives a great range of tightening/loosing treble/bass to taste.

Damn fantastic tone as always Ralle! What difference are you hearing/feeling compared to 820 with the 2.7k cathode? I kinda like it too.
Upping the PI input cap should do nothing to the frequency response really, 0.022uf already couples everything from 7.2hz. 0.044uf makes it 3.6hz
Maybe it slows the response down a bit, like upping the output couplers?

Re: A new clip to try my theory
I recently found a big kick in the evh direction flipping from prerola/blackback cab to a jbl d120/blackback cab, using the 120's adds that zing.Strat78 wrote: I switched from the pre rola/6402 4X12 to the 70's black backs and there was the treble I had been looking for.
I have to agree with Strat too on the core tone Ralle nearly all your clips have never been a radical drift, but this one's gonna be one I'll try. I think I've come to the decision that your core tone all stems from that pink mike stand!

Yet again top draw clip

Re: A new clip to try my theory
The 820 kinda gives it an allready finnished tone... therefore makes it harder to dial in the rest... it got more edge and bite, wich makes me belive it's all there... but after a while things starts to surface... things like not enough claitary... the right kinda scooped mids... so I backed down a bit with putting in 2.7k... I mean, to me there's allway been a kind of regular standard superlead in Ed's sound... that dissapears with the 820/.680-.0022u setup...
The PI input cap don't anything to the freqs... as you said, but it does affect the gain into the PI stage... well, it does affect the input freqs, ofcours... but the output remains the same freqwise... what happens if you put in more amplitude but keep the output the same... the still remaining .022 caps on the output acts like an compressor for the increased gain from the input... stiring it around with in the PI stage... making it more compact at a sertain cap value, of cours... wich value I don't know... to high of a value don't do it, and neither to low...
It kinda flattens it out... Am I making any sence?

Ok... that's it... it's in open now... the pink mic stand...jape88 wrote:I recently found a big kick in the evh direction flipping from prerola/blackback cab to a jbl d120/blackback cab, using the 120's adds that zing.Strat78 wrote: I switched from the pre rola/6402 4X12 to the 70's black backs and there was the treble I had been looking for.

Ralle, Awesome tone and playing there bro, Loved it
Yep, I agree that your core tone is always there, regardless of your spec.

Re: A new clip to try my theory
Thanx guys.
The tubes are the same as before, JJ's EL34's...
About the pu's... the 500t may not be best for this but sounds perfect in my LP... and I've kinda stuck on that one now... it's just to good to play on...
The PB is the same as before as well, with the mod I did a long time ago...

Ralle, what kind of filtering (filter cap values) are you running in the amp?
