We got together this weekend and did another VH tone summit with lots of clips to follow soon

We threw some EH 6ca7s and a Sovtek 12ax7 in V1 for good measure into my amp. This clip is running my JCM800 Mod 5 with a MXR Phaser and an Ibanez AD9 delay and some verb from GarageBand. Guitar is my '74 Gibson LP with the pickup jammed really close to the strings. Sounds to me like a good tube upgrade! Wish I could upload the MP3 instead of SoundClick...

I've used a few sets of those with great results in a Hiwatt DR504 head and a Sovtek Mig 60. They seem to sound good and they have lasted a long time. I also tried the EH EL34 and they were much different and not nearly as good as their 6CA7.

Kicking Ass! Is the delay in front of the amp? Sounds wicked cool!

Sounds awesome. I'm looking to get new tubes so maybe I'll try them out. I use an AD9 too in front of my amp & really like it.
I have the delay time turned almost all the way up clockwise to get the slapback heard on "On Fire ", RWTD, & so on.

Thanks Matt, I have my analog delay set at all the way clockwise for the slowest repeat. And because it's in front of a heavily distorted amp, the effect level has to be set at between 1-2.
The thing I'm feeling between the JJEL34Ls and these EH 6ca7s is a bit more bottom end. Not quite sure if the Sovtek in v1 adding roughly the same amount of gain or perhaps a little less.
That PAF in the LP sounds like the right compliment to this setup too

Aye Eric sounds great, you're shreddin' it up and really gettin' grips on those styles and licks.
I love the EH6CA7s, tighter more immediate bottoms and smoother overall body with clear tops. Just differnt than ELs.
I was wonderin' what you had in that Paul! So a good ole PAF or 70's T-Top?
Nice.

Thanks Dave, tell you the truth, I don't know. Can I tell by just flipping the pup and checking the serial or do I need to pull the cover and check the bobbin for a "T" mark

Huh, are they original to the Paul? What year is it? That's a Custom right?

•mwah• man that is s-w-a-n-k-y. Off the top o' my bean I'd say T-Top.
A good description from High Order: 7.3k - 7.5k AlNiCo 5 Even Wind - Classic '70s "T-Top" tone. The lower output doesn't drive your rig as hard as typical "PAF" winds but these can work well for vintage rock tones with a cleaner character.
Check this out from Gibson. I know they're "replicas", But Alnico 3? That's wacko. Interesting stuff.
BTW, keep the 6CA7s

I hear more top end than your previous clips, it's not subtle to me. Maybe it's not just the eh, could be the paf or sovtek... anyway I like it and it sounds tighter and clearer now! I'd like to hear it w/o a phaser. I also have a new quad of eh 6ca7's, didn't try them yet..
Does your ad9 change the dry signal- tone (when turned on) in any way - boosting it or brighten it etc..?

Yeah the MXR Phaser on the low sweep is adding a lot of bottom end. I have clips without the effects to you can hear just the re-tube. On the AD9, it's not try bypass...yet I haven't really noticed it taking away or adding any highs or lows.

The more I hear the VH1 tone after hearing all the stuff we're doing to try and copy it, it is really noticeable how much more fuzz there is on VH1..I am more inclined to think there is an OD pedal somewhere in front of it, and not an EQ doing the work -- not necessarily to add the fuzz but to add the push --
...I would be curious to hear your tracks with the volume cranked all the way up on a distortion III but the gain low...it would give more mid's and gain...I think you're freakin really close man

what about the eq pedal and the echoplex pre
both pushing the front end? driving the amp further into chaos? we know the power section is already full tilt. the db 'push' of the eq pedal and the 'non-linear' phase response of the ep-3?
i cain't do no distortion pedal hypothetical, man, it would be a shame!
