Nicolette Larson - Can't Get Away From You
Anyone got that track? I remember it being the only one that Ed played outside Van Halen in 1978 on a pro record. It was on youtube some time ago but it has been deleted. So if anyone has that track I would be very glad if you can send it to me or post it here.
Thanks very much.

That's weird. Last week I was thinking the same thing and went to YouTube for it. But of course its a WB tune so it's been pulled down.
I went to iTunes and bought it for .99 and Ed's guitar tone is very nice.

HAH, I just downloaded it from iTunes! Wow... that was a very cool solo. This is the first that I have heard of it!

Re: Nicolette Larson - Can't Get Away From You
So I was walking around in a consignment shop with my wife and parents. I always look through the records. Most of which were about what you would find at a Goodwill store (old '50's and '60's era stuff&Classical, etc), Low and behold I found a near mint copy of 'Nicolette' ! So I got it home and threw it on and the very first track stunned me, it was that song "Gonna take alot of love, etc". I remember likeing that tune when I was a kid in the skating rink
.
I like how there is credits for the musicians on every track. On 'Cant Get Away From You' , it has 'LEAD GUITAR': ?
Ha, Ha, a fricken question mark
That is trippin', guess 'ol Ed, for whatever reason, just didnt want to take the credit. Damn killer solo that is
On the inside sleeve it has a pic of Nicolette with Ted Templeton. They are outside and she has on roller skates and he has a recording/chart clipboard in his hands.
The album is actually really good, and though I had heard the track with Ed before (here actually), I didnt know it was her that sang 'Lotta Love', nor did I know that Neil Young wrote it.

Great story, TS, I want a copy of that record too, Ed's work is just so fresh on that track. Nickolette was a real sweetheart, she died of complications from addiction to Tylenol of all things.

Re: Nicolette Larson - Can't Get Away From You
Thats sad indeed that she has passed. Great voice with a nice smile.
I dont know if it has been discussed here but it says on the album 'Produced By Ted Templeman' & 'Engineered by Donn Landee'
On the inside sleeve it says, "Recorded June & July '78 at Warner Bros. Recording Studios, North Hollywood, CA, Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA."
It sounds like maybe Ed was using a 24 3/4 scale guitar. I'd wager either the 'Shark/Destroyer' or that White Les Paul Custom ?

Wow, those recording dates are interesting. Could they have been in the studio doing the demos or just getting started on the album.
Here is the clip:

She had a pretty cutting voice for allot of things. Anthony Crawford is one of the greats too.

Phil - the recording dates are accurate, and VH was on their 1978 tour at that point. Nicolette also did sessions with the Doobie Brothers for their Minute By Minute album right after (August 1978). Her album was released on September 29, 1978.Strat78 wrote:Wow, those recording dates are interesting. Could they have been in the studio doing the demos or just getting started on the album.

Thanks Bill, good heavens, I somehow saw the date as 1977, instead of 78.wjamflan wrote:Phil - the recording dates are accurate, and VH was on their 1978 tour at that point. Re: Nicolette Larson - Can't Get Away From You
It sure does ! Even though I got that feeling of maybe just a bit of caution on Ed's part, you know that feeling when your tracking a solo on someone else's song and you think " Am I playing too much.....am I playing too fast", etc, etc. Still, I got that Great ED feeling of fun and joy with a ear to ear grin. That guy just COULDNT play anything wrong back then. Had that v1b 2.7k/.68uf type knock to it. Prolly one of those new '78 1959's he was using while his original cache of amps was flying around in limbo. That song ending lick was unique. Sort of a 'YRGM' type thing but much different.
I really enjoy this album. Side one is the pop/rock, funky(but not disco) type stuff and side two is very folky/country/blugrassy with a gospel flair. Real good vocal harmonies.

Hah!!! I was thinking the same thing about the ending lick....Tone Slinger wrote:It sure does ! Just goes to show you that Ed is not some one trick pony. Templeman was probably thinking..."If this Van Halen band thing doesn't work, I can use this kid as an in house studio cat." Or words to that affect....
"If you make a mistake, do it twice and smile and let people think you meant it." Jan Van Halen.

The first time I heard that recording I couldn't help but think if that's how 12301 sounds like straight in and stock...without all the boosting.

I think it's the forerunner of the Unchained ending lick, combined with Ed's YRGM/SOTOTW cadenza, combined with the ITO cadenza....rgorke wrote:Hah!!! I was thinking the same thing about the ending lick....
