JCM800 re-amp rig - My best brown sound so far.

Post by T.J.Fuller » Thu Feb 22, 2007 4:47 am

Earlier tonight I recorded some more tunes in a local studio.

One of the 2 songs recorded was another un-released cover by VH

called - Let's Get Rockin ( for a pre 1978 tribute CD I'm doing)

I used a JCM Marshall into a load box ( amp cranked on 8.5 not 10)

I ran that signal into a Echoplex ep-3 and into another Marshall.

I was really pleased with the lead tone quality but, I sounded like I was using a beefed up strat - my pickups are Seymour Duncan JB model in a homemade guitar w/ no finish , poplar ( maybe this altered the sound)

I think you guys will like this one much better than the last one I posted.

It's the first song.......I think you guys will also dig the Fair Warning type ending I threw in using an 80's AC powered ADA flanger....same one Michael Anthony used.

ENJOY!!

Loved it. Sounds like a fun amp rig. And great playing too.
Almost like a cross between Maiden and VH.

Very 8)

Keep up the good work.

Thanks Mike!

...and thanks for posting so much detailed info. on your amps recently.

I am not in the ballpark tone-wise with majority of the clips around here.

That's reason I joined these forums - was to learn from people who really seem to understand what makes for a good amp tone.

...I'm less than month away from that metro plexi kit purchase.

my girlfriend is all over my case for spending so much on gear last year.

It was all the wrong gear but , you guys know how that goes I'm sure.

Sounded real good ! Loved that energy in the solo, just like vintage Ed. Your geting closer, the Plexi kit will be a sure step in the right direction. Loved the singers voice as well, very Rothy. Record "No more Waiting" and post the clip, I love that one.

Thanks again guys for the kind comments !!

I have been reading all the posts about the Boss ge-10 prior to going to the studio.

I don't own one but, now I want one!

I tried a Boss ge-7 as the only pedal up front besides the ada flanger and EVH phase 90 ( in script mode ).

UGGGH....more sizzle&noise than waffle house on a sat. morning.

but, I did use a new pedal that helped some but, I think it may have robbed some of the good mids that seem neccessary for a full blown brown sound.

In any event , if it helps anyone - I used a BBE Sonic Stomp the whole time up front too.

damn.....now I want one of those GE-10,s.......the gear hunt never ends!

After listening to it again, it's kind of surprising that you were using a JB. To me it sounds like it cuts and bites through more than any JB than I've heard or played. In fact, your tone kind of makes me think of a single coil on steroids. I mean that in a good way.
Cheers to the ears.

You are probably going to laugh but, not only did I bolt that JB into the body ....I went a step further and wood puttied it in there once my action was set .

The guitar is pictured in my pictures section on my space.

my way of expermenting with stuff.

I cut the body and design from poplar from home depot.

This IS probably what did this to the tone, i think I'm a little thin sounding.

That why I posted it - you guys have great ears here.

...so something is off.

moral of the story....don't build guitars with Home Depot wood.

I liked that glassy tone as well. A long time ago I used to run my jcm 800 d i into the front of a 50 jmp. Almost the same. I nailed the Great White tone back then. Then when I joined my first band it was with Billy Nichols on drumes. He grew up with Jack Russel in laHabra. We had fun Great tone.I think Ill try it again

The wood putty thing is funny. So if you ever wanted to use it in another guitar, you'd have to dig at it and chisel it out?

Never tried a poplar wood guitar body but knowing what kind of wood it is, I can see that it might lack a bit of warmth and low end knock. It sure made your very early VH tone kind of cool. I'd imagine it's pretty light weight too.
Cheers to the ears.

sounds cool - i hear that strat like bite - but i also hear some of that vintage OT sweetness - first amp is jcm800 100w? or 50w? and what is the second amp in that set up?
