And I was hoping for GOOD GOOGAMOOGA.
You know what? Today I did a re-take of everything the same, but without the MXR 6 band, and I think it's better. I put VOL I on 6 or 7, just for that little extra that is lost without the slight MXR boost. Low E string is on the ragged edge of staying tight but as I tried to lay the take into the VH track, it stood out as clear as day, just how much POST EQ is actually going on those albums. I'll post another clip when I think I got that part right but I learned a lot trying to layer that in and get it to sound the same. It's very interesting. 8)

something to try... regarding eq - look up spectrum matching plugins - you can take your clip which is tonally and grind wise unbelievably excellent and the spectrum matching will take it the rest of the way automatically matching the eq by the numbers.

obviously, this is only of value if you already have THE TONE which you do. GOOD GOOGAMOOGA!!

Ah thanks bro. Wraps up the stock plexi vs Jose modded, or cacaded/master volume, blah blah blah debates. In my mind anyway. :hide:
I hope you decide to try it. I think you'll love it. That first variac was actually set at 60VAC. The knob is kind of messed up. When the knob on 90, the voltage is 90. When I put the knob on 65, it's 60 Volts. When I put the knob on 115, it's 120 Volts. :stars:

Laneychris, thanks for the words bro. They're pretty cheap on e-bay, for these old types. 8)

Can you record another clip besides TYWH? I'd like to hear the tone on another VH song.

Ok. So here is Jamie again but now with the 100 watt amp and the 2 variac's. I'm panned all the way opposite of Ed and a little louder than Ed's side. I did lay in a 2nd track for the intro lead break but that's it. The rest of the song is one track and no end of song lead tracks.

We all climbed those ladders and found that they were leaning against the wrong wall, but it was fun never the less.

From a purely objective point of view, I really haven't heard anything that captures the essence of the core tone more than these clips. The last one especially... at least to my hears. It is has the sizzle with that second variac.

Jnew thanks for making the effort to post so many clips and share this discovery! :toast:

All good amigo. It's an awesome thing when something makes those ears snap to attention. Unfortunately, I think it's near the end of the line as far as the amps, which is fine. Really what this is all about anyway but I don't have any means to duplicate the post production stuff with only an SM-57 and garage band. Getting the amp tone to this point is purely satisfying but of course I'm left wondering how dead nuts it could be (if it could be) with the other stuff. 8)

James, this continues to be the sickest VH clip I've heard to date. Not only is the tone there but you also have that nice swagger in your playing that is so crucial to making these VH type riffs work. Was this without the 6-band? Is that the super70?

Thanks Phil. Each time I cut a new clip, the playing seems to get a little tighter so the importance of practice cannot be denied. That clip is without the 6 band but still using the Super 70. All I did was dial VOL I from 5 to about 6 1/2 to make up for the MXR6 not being there. Can't go any more than that without the low E losing its "THING" on songs like Somebody Get Me a Doctor, etc.n 8)
