I went to the music store cause I needed some tubes and I saw some KT-77s. I had never heard of them but the guy said they are a direct replacement to EL-34s so I got them. I haven't tried the amp with 34s but I think I have a pair of electro harmonix I could throw in there to see if there's a difference.

Do you think the tubes would make much of a difference with the volume down so low?

Nice job! I love your approach to using whatever  -100 cork sniffers.

Do you have a single coil strat lying around for any future clips? Love to hear it in a different application.

Re: KT77s, just remembered I asked a question of amp builder Kurt Granger a while back:

You offer different tube choices and have recommended different tubes for getting the EVH tone. What are the differences tone- and response-wise between EL34, E34L, KT77 and 6CA7 power tubes?

All very subtle. The E34L and KT77 have a little more headroom. The KT77 sounds a little rounder – the highs are a little softer. Nobody makes a really great 6CA7 anymore.

"Nobody makes a good 6CA7 anymore"

I always ask myself...why is that? WTF? Everyone talks about them, pay crazy ass prices for them. We can spin particles at the speed of light, take a shit in outer space, but nobody can recreate a tube?

Luckily my current amp uses one (1) 6CA7, so I can find NOS matched sets all day!
Interpretation?! I thought I was playing it right!

The EH 6ca7 is as good of a (sylvania/phillips style '6l6' style ) 6ca7 as you will get.

Strat78 has posted clips with these and you can REALLY hear what these tubes can do. He got a certain eq response (and that bottom) that his el-34 clips didnt have.

I was going to post a new clip but I need to take a bit of rest from playing. I have been having pain and tingling in my fingers the last few days. I work at a warehouse and lift all day so it doesn't really help. I'm hoping it's not CTS

Check your family history. Genetics can suck sometimes. I am insane because of it :dlr: .

Ok guys, theres some variances in this so called mod, which values are we hearing and talking about? there are postings of totally incorrect which are being said good to go. As I see it the meat and potatoes are a 2.2n coupler into a 22n coupler in the first 2 stages, or is it in reverse oreder? add a LaMar or a Larry PPIMV imo, tweak the voltage divider cap. Basically a MV with a 2.2n on the 1st stage and a Larry master, is that it??? Just looking for something to do to a hacked 74 JMP,,,

not legally, no. a lot of the manufacturing processes and materials used back then are considered hazardous now. there is a good reason most of the tubes made today are made in russia and china.

for the mod 5, see the sticky at the top of the forum page:

it's a pretty simple set of changes

A CONFUSING part is WHICH side of the v1 12ax7 are you gonna start/end with. This dictates the .o22 or .0022 coupler position on the board. As well as the 'shielded ' wires coming from v1. This can confuse a bit.
Atomic Punk just used the Novisiber (Larry) layout.

I used the layout from SDM's page, I don't know what Larry's layout looks like. I hope I have the .022 and .0022 in the right places

I think he's talking about Larry's schematic in the sticky at the top of the forum.

Yeah, the layout would be the same as SDM's. SDM has the best layout drawings out there. He has SEVERAL versions that are geared toward this spec (Mod V) though often the v1b plate bypass cap on SDM's layouts will show the 2203/2204 'standard' value of .022. The Mod V spec uses a early Super Lead ('68-'73) spec of .0022 there (v1b plate bypass cap).

The 12xxx filtering is just about right for this spec as well (though any filtering will be alright as long as not too low or high, I guess).

SDM has layouts showing how to put the ppimv in one of the speaker jacks (a 'standard' Mod V feature).

I would suggest printing out a SDM layout (100 or 50 watt version) as well as the Larry version.
