Get a load of this comparison. Some guy on the PlexiPalace speaker board re-eq'd and mixed my G12M track. Mine's still too harsh in the high's.

holy cow - i didn't realize how close it was until i heard it right next to the real thing.
most noticeably different though is the high mids - you can hear the character of ed's strings, in the high mids, pushing through and rising above the distortion - maybe ed has slightly less gain coming from the amp and slightly more gain coming from just plain old attacking the guitar with a more aggressive picking technique. it makes for a slightly more "open" sound... maybe that's the "krang"

yer talking about AA?

That aggressive picking technique is all you should need to get that riff 99% exact, it's the main thing you need to play it convicingly.

Yeah, I think Ed plays it with all downstrokes which I'm not used to doing. I tried it but its kinda awkward. I mostly downstroke but I throw in a few upstrokes which does sound different. This guy Crumb, by the way, swears Landee used United mic pre's for the original and I'm trying to find out from him if that's what he did to my recording. By the way has anyone had any luck getting rid of the harsh highend of the G12M reissues thru breaking in? Theses speakers are brand new and am hoping they smooth out over time. I wish I could afford real vintage greenback.

I think someone has finally nailed the brown sound, im really impressed, if you got your pickup changed around a little bit and picked as aggresively as possible you would have that sound nailed 99 percent perfect. Congratulations man!

I think Eddie has (had?) the strongest wrist pick attack of any player I've ever heard (including the shredders). SRV also squeezed sustain and extra gain? thru shear force of fretting hand attack on heavy gauge strings. I don't play enough to maintain the chops to play Eddie spot on, came closer when I was younger! I can also hear the difference btwn my track and Eddie's besides the better technique. I think I'm coming close but Eddie's amp just had some mojo going on that cant be explained. If you listen to all of his recordings whether he turns down the volume knob and plays clean (beginning of Fools) or full tilt (VH1) his sound is always toneful, never too much bass or too much treble. That's why for me his tone will always be the ultimate hard rock tone. It was just Magic!

yeah - the different effects treatments on the 2 clips is making it hard to compare apples to adamsapples... hee haw!
my opinion is - i think stan's voice is closer - but the eq and fx are making adamsapple's sound more convincing.
after i heard aa's clip yesterday, i got to thinking about how much the effects and eq have to do with the whole thing - i played around in Sonar duplicating what i hear on the intro to Ain't Talkin' Bout Love - i'm going to stick stan's clip in the sonar template and repost it with effects that are closer to the real thing.

bmf5150 -Ain't Talkin' clip with some early VH effects added and a little compression - i didn't touch the EQ.

as you all know it's a fine line between not enough effects and "gone ape shit!" i think i kept a lid on it - that's a great sounding amp you have bmf5150.

As far as what was done to the clip you'll have to ask Mr Crumb. He was the guy who edited it from my post over at the vintageamps board.

I think adams sounds closer myself. If you compare both of their tracks with the original..however both Stan's and Adam's have a top end fizzy I don't like.
It may be in the recording process...I would love to hear both of them live.
