I've always found Sozo caps somewhat dark sounding. Are these clearer for high gain applications?

Exactly , a key thing I strove for but without gaining any modern capacitor unmusical artifacts. Just like an original mustard, nothing more nothing less(Mustards work GREAT!!!!! in a high gain/ multi gain stage amp. )
