I don't know if it was done this way but it seems logical to me thinking like a sound man. If Ed's tone was based on a mix of JBL's for clean and G12's for crunch. Then you would mike the both of them and mix the signal to taste.

That was me in the previous post. Man signing in every time is a pain. I must not have my cookies set correctly.

How about if a guy is really cheap and wants to get "in the ballpark" and has an empty 412 ... which Eminence speakers might get close? Like from the Legend or Red Coat series. These speakers are reasonably priced, unlike a lot of the Celestion copies/clones.

If you’ve ever seen pictures of Ed’s ’78 rig…the JBLs are never mic’ed.

I would think old pre-rola 25 & 30 watt celestions would be ideal for that early sound. I hope someone meant "vintage30's", not the 60 watt vintage 30's made today...those arent even close. From what I have played thru, I would go with the following new speakers. I have not played any pre-rola's in a while but I am sure they would fit the bill perfectly.....in no order I might add.
* G12H30 RI, Greenback RI, Both Heritage Series speakers or Scumbag M-75's and H75's....those are nice sounding speakers BTW.
As far as using 55hz speakers, I dont think they are necessary for that sound nor am I sure he even used those in particular.

The early pre-Rola’s do have a different sound to them.

They have more bloom in the midrange and more bell like character on top. Think smokier and chimer.

The Rola celestion has a flatter tone.

I have played through at least 30 different bottoms from 15 watter’s all the way up.

I just picked up another set of original greenback 30's 55Hz and a set of Heritage. I currently have 25's from 71 where the change had just taken place.

If the Heritage sound like pre rola 20's they will get me closest to VH 1 from what I remember.

I love them all and can make music on any….

I heard that there is no such thing as a Pre-Rola....that Rola made the early Celestions. Is this the case? :?:

Pre-rola is a term loosely applied to 25/30 watt Celestion speakers made in the Thames Ditton Surrey factory. Celestion moved the production of these speakers to Ipswitch and labeled the company name Rola Celestion. They were one and the same company.

The important part was that concurrent with the move Celestion changed cone formulas. Some Rola Celestion speakers continued to use pre-rola cones these are commonly called transition speakers and sound the same as pre-rolas but since they are labeled different bring slightly less money on resale. The pre-rola cones were all gone around 1971 or so.

BTY I'm not being a speaker snob! I am just stating a fact that the early prerola's do sound different.
