So this pot had the red dye on the solder?
I iust ordered that book, and another on hot rodding a Fender.
The reviews on both were steller on Amazon.

Just in case, its online version is good enough...

Re: George saw Ed's amp? Spill some beans Mr. Velvet!
I know. But when people refer to it as "the other secret" part in the plexi, and won't say what it was, it kind of irritates me. Supposedly it is part of the Friedman/Metro recipe, and Friedman has been kind of protective of this. Someone shared this with me, but I already had the 50k pot in my amp. I've kept quiet about this, but since some people are kind of throwing it in others faces "I know something you don't." I thought I'd just put it out there.stef wrote:I agree with Mike. That little "tweak" is (was) well known, it's in the pv 5150, inside tube amps torres, all over this forum since 2006. Nothing special or secret about it at all
It's funny, there are lots of great, useful mods out there, but when someone finds out that a particular mod was in "THE" plexi, they get kind of goofy. The 50k mod has been around forever and discussed on this forum a long time ago. But now, some people are acting like it's some mystical secret, kept hidden from society by the likes of the Illuminati and the Rosicrucians.

The fact is no one knows what exactly was in the amp spec-wise back in 1977 and that's the only year and sound I am interested in. Any oddball part (in the amp or maybe even missing) that we are trying to discuss nowadays is maybe of no significance for the 1977 sound. We should not and cannot trust any one, because there is no living soul who knows exactly what specs were in THE amp in 1977.

I respect his position. If EVH takes his amp to you, it's an honor, but he won't want you to share gut shots, and probably have you sign a nondisclosure form. Frankly, I'm suprised Dave shared as much as he did.
If that 50k mid pot was in there.... no biggie. If it had red dye, then that's really rare, and predates any alterations.
I'm still going to try everything for myself regardless.

I agree. Dave F shared something confidential and he only asked not to go public with this info. I played by that rule because I respect Dave and understand the "concept of confidentiality", and I also think that Public does not deserve this info

Yes, and the important thing is the guys who truly love the craft and do the work will find out about this stuff in a way that is much more meaningful.stef wrote:I agree. When an amp crosses your bench, well it kind of falls in your lap. I still keep my mouth shut about his stuff out of respect. Plus I have my own recipe anyway. Other things shown to me by others under the agreement that I not divuldge, I keep my mouth shut about too. Otherwise you lose trust

Re: George saw Ed's amp? Spill some beans Mr. Velvet!
I'm way late to the party, as usual. Sorry.
I've seen people posting about the "secret part" but didn't realize it was referring to the 50k mid. That mod has been around for ages. I think Dave Bray was one of the first guys I knew of using it. Probably 10 years ago, or more.
Technically, it lifts the tone stack further from ground, adding a little gain and making it slightly less effective. Also, shifts the mid cutoff frequency a bit.
Check out the Duncan tone stack program and play with the values.
Any time I document an old amp part of the process is measuring the value and taper of each pot. I've found some interesting stuff over the years. Typically, pots are over value. I've seen lots of 35k mid pots that are stamped 25k value.

Thanks George. Do you think that Philip's .68uf chicklet was stock in that amp, oh and what resistor value was hiding under it?
