Ah, the white knob is always a lurking factor of Metroamp speculation and folklore.

I think it's a cigarette lighter he installed from his old Peugot. Just tapped 12v off the PT.

Bwahahahahahaha!!!

good one

no shit will all he used to smoke, and probably still does.

Still you have to admit the first VH album is more compressed and cascaded sounding than the rest which sound more open plexish

I have also been very perplexed about that '77 era tone as well.

It did seem to sound a bit different, gainier, and tighter. I reckon Ed had his bass on zero in '77. By WACF and Fair Warning, you hear more low end flub. It could have been that Ed was turning his bass knob up a bit ?
In '77 I hear an attribute that indeed has me thinking cascade. Ralle and then Rockstah (rip) both pondered as much as well. He was crankin' though, regardless of cascade or not  .

Looks like a 2" ot for beef, and a big v3 cap in the corner for tightness.. Add a rosewood neck and you have 77

Interesting re: FW, though I still have not been able to get that nailed even with turning that up and a Lester Paul. Wonder what recording voodoo went into that one.

I never paid much attention to the OT. Whats with the bell covers? Is there something covering part of the laminantes? Like tape or something.
I thought it was a regular 1.5" tranny. Look closer....

This been discussed before?

Lots of discussion about the size of the OT and the choke on page 4 after this photo was posted on page 3. This is the thread that made me want to try a 2" 132 on my 12,000 after Ben got the ball rolling on the 132 speculation (thanks Ben!). Looks like you chimed in too, Shannon.

Yeah, I remember that thread now. It looks as though the PT is different in that pic with it sitting on top of the Kramer bodies.

Suhr has stated that he is ex. military electronics/tech/inspections and knows what original solder joints look like. He said Ed's was stock, except for the fat cap and the possibility of the 'white knob' as having been a cascade of some sort.

I dont think that adds up.I mean think about it, he only had that amp for one or two 'short' periods. How many of us find things wrong or different about our OWN work in our OWN amps. I think someone would have to be with that amp of Ed's more than that, to acertain exactly every little thing/solder joint.

For one, the 4ohm tap that Ed's is on now wasnt stock 12xxx. It would have been either 16 (mostly) or 8 (often). 4 ohm tap was done later, probably with the tranny change AFTER vh1 was recorded, who knows ?

I think that most of the things done to Ed's amp must have happened AFTER that first album. The newer Marshalls (definatly the early to mid 70's era) were much louder than his 12xxx, so he probably had Jose or someone try to give him that aspect (different trannies/4ohm tap, etc), while keeping the tone and vibe (of his 12xxx). Plexified mentioned that sort of. Ed also, in that pre production WACF interview, mentioned about his transformers had been "Beefed Up".

So I think it is all but IMPOSSIBLE to know what exact spec Ed's was running at the time of that first albums recording (Sept. '77). No one knew or had the forsight to recognize what was about to happen to the guitar/music world :evh: :vh:

I don't know how to reconcile John's "all the solder joints were untouched" with Ed and Dave's, " it was rewired and messed up and Dave put it back to as close to original as possible." Sounds like two amps....
