I think those Gene Simmons demos demonstrated how a 69 circuit can sound real shitty if you record it crappy. I can get that tone out of my 69 going through shit mic preamps, then the same amp through my Souncraft mixer, and it's back to the way it sound in front of you. Like Hair of the Dog meets 1984. Almost as good as my 12000, and prefered over my 12000 by my bass player, cause it can nail "For Those About to Rock tone"
So yes the amp sounds different, but I think the recording equipment and technique was just as crucial. With out naming names, it's probably the biggest difference between the great clips, and average clips in these forums too.
A goo mic and preamp will make you able to record it, the way it sound in front of you. I bet that amp in the Gene Simmons studio would have sounded similiar to 1984 tone, if he had recorded it with Ted.

I don't know what year of Super Lead it was on that Gene Simmons demo. Whatever Ace or Paul were using at the time. According to EVH and Roth they even played KISS' instruments. Either way it sounds like Eddie playing through Ace's shit, and I never thought KISS had great guitar tones.
Why is it we can remember where all the wires go, but can never find a pick?
