Dude.... your THERE.
All day long.
It sounds so close who could ever hope to get closer? If Ed had your recording gear and used your his amp I bet he couldn't make it any closer its that close.
But keep twiddlin and makin clips because thats a puuurty sound  Remember the limits of your recording interface won't be the same as the buku$$$$ analog top end stuff at sunset oo. Take that into consideration as well.
When I seen pics of Ed's mics they were almost touching the cone and looked dead center. Lotta brightness there.
Plus take into account how broke in Eds amp may have been or his speakers, preamp tube inconsistencies, the humidity that day, all these little things no one can control really but can effect the sound.

Which clip are you talking about? The Jamie's Cryin clip or the RWTD with 8.2K boosted. Two different amps is why I ask.

The new one with the smidge of e.q. tweak. Its just more.... hmmm.... cutting .... and more outta the box sounding to me.
More alive I guess you could say with better fidelity. Your old amp sounded awesome too but it is dark in comparison from what I hear.
and we are dealing with what you said-the scrunch of digital format here
I can only imagine what it sounds like in front standing there

James the amp sounds great  How would you describe it as compared to your JTM/JMP 45/50 amp? I'm on board with DC here, the new amp is brighter as compared to your 45. The recording adds more mids, but that amp is probably really bright right there in the room ?

Hey Andy, how ya been bro? Thanks for the compliment. The new amp is definitely a but punchier and cleaner but I think (and I'm hoping) that will change as the amp takes some heat as it ages. Just have to wait and see. On that clip, I had Everything dimed but I normally wouldn't play like that because the low E falls apart. It's ideal at about 6 maybe 7 for the right punctuality. I just wanted all the gain I could get for that dry run clip with no boosting and stuff and the lows were really full for a bit of that thunder in those pick slide tricks. I'm dying to know how strat78 does his. He's the best in the gave for that.

dirtycooter, I agree that the EQ boost sounds more like the VH track. Gave a more of that sheen on the top. Still need to make a clip with the 4X12 with the Scum PVC's as those are definitely more higher end aggressive. Loving the amp though. Not sure if and what I'll be changing but for the time being, it's untouched. 8)

For the bottom end low E are you running a 40 or a 42 string? Back in the day it is reported Ed used 40 here. Maybe this is a reason?? Hold the bottom end together there tighter??
We all know there woulda been likely some mild bump at the board, so you got a little bit there and it is workin the way it should and thats subtley, you don't have the actual UA610 or nothin-a little frequency shift or hair there, figure that in here as a factor. Also the mastering final cut. Then there is the studio jape that can be played with some.
We got some room here for more shtuff still but now your gettin so close we have to split atoms now

Mic cables vary big time-I prefer mogami gold here myself-cheap ones can suck noticeably
The low e guage of string
Mic placement or dual mic-we know 57 but whats the second mic and position? Phase?
UA treatment
pre tube rodeo swappin-stuff could happen here still
mic a different speak in the cab-they can and do vary slightly
Anyone else got some secret studio sauce?

Damn! I FORGOT! Did you boil your strings prior to putting on??

I had never really given it thought but I use .009 hybrids and I'm pretty sure the low E is a .046 on those. :scratch

Was thinking about buying another mic after hearing strat78's clip. Not sure which to get. I'm not really even sure about how to properly use the one SM-57 I have, much less a 2nd mic. Wouldn't they have to be about the same distance from the grill cloth? Seems they could get out of sync. :what:

Heres what I and Rockstah did with the 57 as we discussed this some.
Point striaght in as close to the cloth as you can and the center of the mic should be on the rim of the dust cap. Half cone/ half dust cap to the face of the mic.
The second mic if you watch Steve Stevens on youtube (wish I could remember which one now) he uses the second one out away from the speaker and further back than the 57 (again you gotta find this vid for the ball park area he gave on its distance and location) then he flips the phase to reverse on the second mic.
As far as what kind the second mic is or where it really is I can't remember what he said-but its back further and its phase reversed.
These two are blended but the phase is trick here.
The dull and bright iso clips that were here can be gotten by movin a 57 around from dead center and the duller tone is more middle of the cone.
For sole purpose of learning mic positions and their effects I recommend everyone do a recording and listen to each position.
Start dead center square on. Play a diddy for about 20-30secs. Move mic one inch toward the outter edge of the cone and do it again. Keep goin till your at the doped edge. You will find all kinds of colors and overtines as the mic travels to the outter edge. Then you can listen to the playback in sequence and hear what happens when the mic is a certain place.
most of the time though that first example I told you is a majority winner base here. Its bright but most true usually to gettin the VH best out of a greenback.
The there is angled on and off axis where the mic is either angled toward the dust cap or angled toward the coneoutter edge.
Then comes the more distant mic techniques.

Some cool info there. I'll definitely be playing around with this stuff. And I don't doubt that these positions would all vary depending on the riff being played and what works with it. 8)
