And don't forget era correct comps like Musty's and Piph's. Original Sylvania 6ca7's. Original trans rewired by ******. Build an amp with that stuff. With all the shipping, customs fees, tax, I'd need 3G's just to break even. And i have a lot of that sitting around thats worth more on ebay than it is in an amp!
Add another $35 for the grilled cheese wrap press mod, and your way over the top.

Re: Price of your amp build or mod?
But this is everywhere.... a few years ago the amp market "boomed" and people started to build amps and sell like water... here in brazil a few good amp builders rised.... good amps (mostly clones, but not all of them), good parts, good price.... them the orders went to the stars and who were intelligent enough to manage the wait list kept the reputation...
But by 2010 or 2011 I was asking myself if there's enough guitar players in the country that could buy a tube amp, even with a lower price than the marshalls and peaveys arround the shops... There seemed to have too many builders for to liitle guitar players with money AND knowledge to buy a tube amp.
Well, the answer to my question lies in Vanhalen5150 and Stra78 statements.... probably the same happend in US (and of course, the boom started way before there than here). It is no different from the real state crisis in 2008, in minor scale
just a bubble groing up... someday it should be retracting to the real size....
Now I'm starting to think that koreans and chinese are learning how to do it.... Many people enjoying the new marshalls made in asia.. many people talking good stuff about JCA, the new randalls.... Can't compete in that level, even a boutique amp being a complete different thing, it's a very small slice of the market.... most of the people want that red glow behind the grill and afterall, even with those chinese amps never being able to compete tonewise with a good boutique amp, they still sound good.(better than any SS/digital gear)... that is the "problem"

Re: Price of your amp build or mod?
There are ways to make amp build much less expansive without ruining the sound.
PT and choke can be by Classic Tone and OT - Heyboyer. Fuse holders and Switches and such can't add to the sound, so they had to be functional and practical, not NOS-like looking. In most places it's better to use Metal Film resistors, and not NOS Iskras or CC's... One 0,1uf and 0.68uf bypass cap can be any polyester 5%, not the Sozo, because they are not in the Signal Path. Bypass cap for the AC is a short circuit, so no need for expansive caps. Filter caps - JJ's... It's possible to build and amp that will cost you less than a 1k$ and that will sound Very-Very good. Better than any production model, even a "Hand-wired" model from the Marshall. Actually it's a good idea to make the list of the parts that are practical, not magical! Just to point out, which one of them can be replaced by the NOS types... Any one Interested? I'll think I can post my take on that, and others can correct me if I wrote some thing wrong...

I think it is an investment. Those here have or are getting and sticking with what they really want. But there is a crowd out there that will be all over deizel for about 6 months then dump that for a bogner then dump that for some other foo foo brand. People follow trends to in the amp world. Its like a fashion statement or something to some guys.
But the hard core plexi guys? They are after one thing and one thing only. If you got a decent platform you can make that one amp last a lifetime. If your plex is not up to snuff you can make ever imcreasingly better as time goes on if you really want to.. Look how long Ed has his number one and the wooden one. He has dragged them around forever. He didn't get all over boogies then this then that. He pretty much stayed true with the exception of soldano. Now he has his own slo basically and still uses the old amps.
Can you see AC/DC using a bogner or somethin? They stick with what they know and like and thats that.
S o I say if you are able to determine you want a plexi and thats all you want, life is short-could be over tomorrow for anyone of us. Go get it

J.D. Simo is doing a great job of living that philosophy- Good point!

p.s. I have around $1,300.00 invested in my Metro build, including Heyboyer transformers and mustard caps from Turkey and Greece via eBay. Don't know if that included the Mojo headcab, but if I ever finish it, I'm keepin' it!
