So does my friend's '76 cabs.

Right..I was just trying to clear up the fact that they don't have a specific "Greenback" model. That was just the color of the magnet cover. However, it can be said that there were no greybacks or blackbacks pre-74. They were ALL green back then.

Speaking of which, one of mine came off and now my '73 cab sounds WAY different!  Just kidding...but George, would you know what type of glue would be best to reattach it so my cab doesn't lose it's mojo?

Jon,

All that's true, but most people DO use the term Greenback for the G12M, including Marshall and Celestion. It may be wrong, but it is common parlance.

You still need some 25watts, and to get that VH1 rip sound some JBL120s, I think Terry told me he 2 JBLs and two 25watt in one cab, you might find those JBL 120 in old Fender combo type amp get the amp keep the speakers and send the amp to Flames!!!! LOL

Yep. That´s what I meant. I have seen pictures of really old greenbacks sporting 20 watts, max.

But yeah, I should have been more specific. g12m25 and g12h30 :P

The thing is, I wasn´t thinking vintage speakers, I meant the current production models.

I've heard & have seen pics where Eddie has a cab with JBLs on top & Greenbacks on the bottom of the same cab...only on the 1st tour. This particular pic shows the cab on top of another. Eddie admitted that he only powered his bottom cabs in his stacks so his ears wouldn't blow out. I know that Ed says a lot of things to mislead interviewers...but I tend to believe this claim. Reason: I've seen pics & footage of Ed, during his Eruption solo, where he's on his knees with his guitar pushed right up against the bottom cab causing all sorts of sustain & feedback. Those JBL F130s are really clean & bright…typically associated with Fender amps. They’re extremely hard to find with the original cones in tact. I hear that the original cone is what made those speakers particularly desirable for that clean-loud Fender tone. I’m guessing that it wouldn’t sounds very good at all in a Marshall. I think the EVH, JBL, brown sound connection is not based on good evidence. ‘Just my opinion. I wasn’t there in the control room. But someone had to be…and they’re not talkin’. :?

Greenback greenback greenback....

Again, greenback is NOT A MODEL!. It was purely a cosmetic thing.

All pre-'74 Celestions had a green back on them.

So...everyone has seemed to figure out that he's using two G12H-30s and two JBLs. And the G12H that he used was the 55Hz version. Well since I have a set of '73 G12H 55Hz, I've come pretty damn close to the EVH tone so I'm gonna guess that he miked the G12Hs and not the JBLs.

How's your amp project coming along? 'Got any updated pics? I'm planning on building my own here soon and am curious how it's been going for you? I'd like to keep track of any building tips & tricks. I wonder if this forum has a section for that. :?

Pre Rola would be ideal but the reissue greenbacks would get you pretty darn close also. G12H30s to but the reissue greenies would still be closer.
