hey guys, i know this is a pretty old post but there should be an error on that info about half-airing the tone zone..
i have my Tone Zone opened here and the hotter coil seems to be the screw coil, measure it 'bout 8.98k! the other coil (slug coil) is 8.17k, so i only removed the metal retainer without moving the magnet.. that make more sense to me to balance coils, am i wrong on figurin' it out?

Re: Music Man EVH Pickup Magnet
The north coil (slug) should read about 9.1 - 9.5k (red/black). The south coil (fillister) should read about 8.2 - 8.5k (green white). All of my tone zones vary a bit, but that's about the ball park.ct88 wrote:hey guys, i know this is a pretty old post but there should be an error on that info about half-airing the tone zone..

That said there are quite a few way to get the ebmm axis evh pickup vibe, or extremely close.
1: butcher two tone zones: take both screw coils, remove the screw poles and carefully drill out the bobbin on one, throw slugs in it, put it together and it's a done deal - that's the axis.
2: buy an at-1, un-air it, un-virtual vintage it, slap a brass base plate on it, and you have essentially an axis.
3: buy a breed, remove the Allen poles, drill out the north bobbin, and stick slugs in it, put philister in the other, you again have essentially an axis.
4: stop chasing ghosts, don't worry about it, and just enjoy playing guitar.
All of the above pickups at one point made the dimarzio list for closest to the axis at one point.

Re: Music Man EVH Pickup Magnet
Thanks for the reply joey! I definetly agree to not chasing ghosts, i'm only searching for my sound, and for that i just want to play for a while all the pickups used in my favourite records, and that's not only VH
. To achieve what you want you just have to try and try and try again, so you will know what do you like best, that's my point of view
I didn't liked the missmatched coils of tone zone neither the at-1, one too modern, the at-1 too airy. Also i'm goin to try a full magnet (like a SD one, longer) under the at-1, unaired, virtual vintaged but with brass plate
