Re: Gene Simmons Demos Date

Let me start by saying that none of the sources I've checked out about VH's club days are complete or in sync with each other.... So..... I'm not sure if this is any more reliable than the Leadguy's sources, but it's worth a look:
http://web.archive.org/web/200012130027 ... bdays.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It does have a more complete listing than the VH Encyclopedia, which I also have and find to be lacking.
First, I'm with Leadguy on Ed using his own equipment for the demos. They may have played the showcase on Kiss' equipment, but the demos are Ed's.
Going by the band's official site, they didn't play the Starwood until 6/1/76 - Rodney B. got them in. I have a boot of the show where Dave says they're playing "on a good Tuesday night", so at least that matches up.
I have to say that the tone is not that far off from what Gene captured - clean without the raunchy midrange and sustain we're used to - much more cranked stock Plexi. The other thing that matches up well is the arrangements seem to still match, for ex. starting On Fire with the harmonics, etc. The other shows from that time all sound similar (with the exception of the Goldenwest which I think might be from a later date).
An example from 5/29 - Pasadena Convention Center: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBSoD0d6N_w" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Notice also that there's a hole in the band's schedule from 6/13 to 7/31. Going by the sound and arrangements, that seems like a plausible time for Gene to have recorded them. I'll leave it to Leadguy to verify Kiss' tour dates b/c I don't have that info.
The last thing I'll add is that once you get to the Fall of '76 Ed's tone changed and became more like what we are accustomed to hearing. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8oVGtzGMQo" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Hope this helps somewhat.
