Interesting that you should revive this old thread James considering the Super 70 you tried in a Northern Ash Strat did not sound good, but later it did sound great in a lighter Swamp Ash Strat as we can all hear in your latest " Take your Whiskey Home" clips.
I don't remember who's idea is was to try it in the lighter guitar, but the reason he tried it in the swamp ash strat was because my 76 Greco Destroyer is very light. (Surprisingly light!!), and we know that many have confused Japanese Sen and called it Japanese Ash. It's not Ash!
Now I have a 75 Destroyer which is also very light. I had no idea there was such a variance in weight Phil....from 7 to 11lbs wow
You can't buy Sen. They passed a law in Japan baning export in 81. Knowing what I know now,If I was going to clone a Destroyer, I would make the body out of Swamp Ash and put Super 70s in it. Sounds damn good in Jnews Whiskey clips, and we know Korina was not the wood

Re: Japanese 'SEN' strat
A light weight hardwood like Alder would probably be another good choice. The Super 70 didn't sound as good in the heavy northern ash but that guitar also has a Floyd. That's a big player as well. Hard, heavy steel nut, heavy hardened steel bridge with only 2 floating anchor points. Not really a recipe for natural wood tone.
